I've not tried that FC, probably because tapping it nearly always works.

I think it is the heat from the hot water causes the metal of the lid to expand faster than the glass of the jar, thereby loosening it. :) Of course, avoid using boiling water as you might crack the glass which, while technically this would be “opening” it, might not be all that convenient. ;)

I am near traumatised by Evo Stik - my dad used it to put up cork tiles in the bathroom in the early 80's.. stunk the place out. I swear he was high as a kite when he was doing it too.

I knocked one of my wife's ceramic decorations into the ceramic sink in the bathroom. Guess which one is chipped with a couple of large cracks, and which one remains intact?

Some years ago we used to cover sheets and sheets with Formica, if you can imagine half a dozen 8x4 sheets coated on both sides and the amount of fumes you can guess I was fairly high at times.

                  Happy days.

Or use a Rubber Jar Opener Gripper Pad/( multi use ) for undoing a jam jar lid. Works perfectly .

That reminds me, my Mother who had arthritis in her hands always used a wide rubber band doubled around lids to get them off jars.

What a lot of people dont realise is the fumes are heavier than air and at the right concentration can be explosive.
So they collect at the low points in a building........... until someone lights a cigarette.
