Can someone explain why people would go to Iran, bearing in mind what happens there and government warnings not to.
They then presumably expect the government to get them out.
It's almost like offering yourself as a hostage, some stupid people about.

Thames Water have kindly informed me that they are sticking their charges up by 34.4%. It's outrageous, especially as they have broken rules on dividend payouts to their owners. They have been milking the company dry for years and now demand us poor customers to help them pay their shareholders more and more. Ofwat seems particularly useless, what's the point of a toothless regulator, or worse one that seems to be in cahoots with the water companies.

Another thing, it's taken me over an hour to work out what extra Thames Water are going to cost me. Initially they emailed saying my increase would be £17/month, well that's nonsense after reading all the small print of their charging documents. They have purposely hidden the charges in obscure ways and scattered throughout a very verbose document. A simple table would have helped comparing the costs to last year. I am still struggling to work out what extra I will have to pay, it will be at least double what they estimated. It doesn't seem that long ago I was only paying £25/month. Now I reckon double that. We are on a meter, only 3 at home so little chance of reducing our usage.

I applied to mid Kent water about their social tarrif but apparently I'm already on it.
Not heard about the rises yet, but I'm getting the impression that they are all using the recent publicity to just charge what they like.
All in the name of saving the environment.

I think the last thing on most Water Co's minds has much to do with environmental issues. Salaries, bonuses and dividends seem to rule the roost. Pretty much the same with the power supply co's.
Best advice would be to move to Coronation Street..........the inhabitants can all afford to buy Fast Food and endless Coffees, dress in the latest fashion, dye their hair every 5 mins, spend hours in the pub/cafe/bistro, produce endless offspring, rarely spend time at work. Some apparently have debt worries but whilst the script writers manage to squeeze in just about every other storyline going, no one on The Street appears to worry about their Water or Power bills nor their CouncilTax rises ...........Paradise indeed

He could use Ena's hair net....

:) In one of today's newspapers:
"Welcome back to Posted after an eventful weekend, what with continuing geopolitical stress, a painful loss in hockey, a nervous win in hockey, a couple of gigantic snowstorms (in our part of the country, at least) and the rarest of plane crashes. There's also a new poll, conducted entirely in our imagination, in which about 50 per cent of people in Ontario and Quebec are suffering from severe back pain today as a result of shoveling, 40 per cent have colds or the flu and 10 per cent have neither because they made a pact with the devil at some point, probably. This poll is considered inaccurate 99.9 per cent of the time, but feels pretty darn spot-on to us. "

What would happen if everybody refused to pay their water bill? I understand that water supply to a house cannot be cut off.

I would rather not pay my council tax bill, which is approximately 6 times as much as the water bill, and we don't even get our bins collected as they are on strike. Our water is going up by about 22%, but it's still value for money.

It would probably have a similar effect to when the government/regulators announce massive fines for companies.

We all end up paying more in the long run.

What happened in Ireland when the majority refused to pay (the government only brought in water bills 10 years or so ago), was that water bills were scrapped... seems crazy not to have to pay anything to be supplied with safe water, though.
