I can't get the link to work, but I've just been reading about a scam outfit that's been removed due to their online activity. It was on Sky news.

Just recently a cousin was caught out by a Jet2 scam, he forwarded on the message to all his family and relations as the deal seemed too good to be true, just ring a number to claim 100s of free holidays. He is an intelligent man but lacking in common sense and was caught with his guard down.

I have recently received several cold calls on my landline where the caller asks to speak to someone using a Christian name. I do not usually give them time to get far into conversation but the last caller suddenly asked me if I was with Sky. I said no and put the phone down but have since wonder if this is a new ploy for scammers.

We had our landline took out a few years ago. We just didn't really use it anymore.

The one reason I sometimes miss it is for the fun I sometimes had with cold callers. Some of my fun things to do, depending on what mood I was in, included:

simply listen but don't say a word. See how long they keep trying to get a response.

Repeat exactly what they say, exactly, word for word.

Speak gibberish in a pseudo foreign language.

      Try to sell them something.

It was fun. But not fun enough to warrant getting a landline back.

I spent most of my working life, as a techo, knee deep in, generally, very intelligent electronic engineers. They came from many different backgrounds and nationalities, but the majority of them displayed a total lack of any common sense.

I amused myself recently when a cold call came through, one of several which had called in the previous few days.
I screamed and shouted down the phone, very unlady like , Leave me alone, Stop calling me, Go away etc. etc. It certainly made me feel better. There was a stunned silence and for several weeks there were no more calls.
Did I feel guilty being so rude to a poor soul trying to earn a crust? Nah!

Common sense is uncommon and not directly related to intelligence or job title. It occurs to me that most people are born with an adequate amount common sense, but it can get educated out of them by public schools or made redundant by elfundsaftee rules or helicopter parenting.

We have two landlines (we're greedy) and we now have Call Guardian on them so don't get spam calls - which I'm sad about . I used to love playing up to the and tried to see how long I could keep them on the line for. My record is 32 minutes.

Originally Mrs Shiney said I was not being nice with messing them around - until she started getting the calls on her line. :heehee:

Some of my conversations with them were quite humorous (to us) and Mrs Shiney took down in shorthand my side of the conversations (she is extremely fast with shorthand and typing - won some competitions years ago). She later added the other side of the conversation and typed them up. Some years ago I put them on GC but can't remember where  :roflol:

We receive a fair amount of scam emails which I report to the government website. :blue thumb:

That is an “ interesting” comment regarding public schools. For my sins I was educated at a public school way back in the 60s . Long before it became a well known condition, my school was years ahead in helping children who had been labelled moronic by their state schools when they were indeed intelligent children who were highly dyslexic. While I was at the school one such pupil was helped to such an extent that he sat and passed the entrance exam to Oxford University to study Physics so not all public school churn out chinless wonders!

Tongue was planted firmly in cheek @hailbopp ,
I'm certain that many people with chins of Bruce Forsythe proportions, educated in state schools have no common sense either

That's how the link was showing for me @Palustris, but I wasn't sure about it showing correctly

We regularly used to get scammers on the phone at work - it went in cycles of around 3 or 4 weeks. Great fun winding them up. One of them was very persistent, and was clearly having a bad day. When he realised he wasn't getting his message across about how he could see that my 'internet connection was faulty' so phone this number' blah blah blah, he started down the road of 'the photos I have on my computer'. It could have been very interesting, but I didn't really have time to ask him if it was the gimp mask ones that bothered him or just the naked shots...

I get them on the home phone too, and do the same if I'm not busy. I'm registered with TPS but it makes no difference- they still phone you.
They're very, very rarely legitimate callers @Goldenlily26 - they're just scammers, so they get no sympathy from me whatsoever.

I had a phishing attempt on my work email today. Claimed to be from the DVLA saying they had some wrong details for me, and I had to click a link to correct them... My employer regularly tests us so when I reported it I was expecting to get an automated "congratulations on spotting the dodgy email" response, but nothing - so it was a real phishing attempt.
No chance of me falling for it since I don't drive!

I had a phishing email yesterday supposedly from an on line French store and that payment was waiting to be authorised! it was for quite a large sum of money that I don't even have in my account! It has been forwarded to the phishing site.
