    you could hardly have avoided noticing if hornets had been around.... I would have said wasps - it's the most likely thing, but I'm baffled if it isn't that...

    Thank-you all for the sugestions.
    The ants seem a possibility but would we get Carpenter Ants in England?

    I think I will put a sticky band round and see if anything sticks to it.

    (by the way my surname is Carpenter)

    no relation to the carpenter ants then maurice? I dont think we have carpenter ants in the uk.

    No we don't have carpenter ants in Britain. The sawdust is almost certainly from wood boring beetles of the woodworm type
