It probably partly depends on soil type and surroundings, but I find the suitable low growing plants come in naturally if you mow at 5-6cm and leave a little longer between mowing. So I am beginning to get something I can walk on with varied flowers depending on season. Yes a patchwork effect.
Might try adding more in once I've done all the jobs needed elsewhere in the garden, but currently happy with how it's coming along :dbgrtmb:.

It's more practical, from a not treading the wild flowers down point of view, to have paths through the wild garden. :blue thumb:

As I understand it, one of the differences between the lawn idea and a wildflower area is that the plants are low spreading ones that can naturally cope with light treading and mowing and spring up again, whereas meadow flowers include the taller growing species that eventually shade out and out compete the shorter ones. The taller plants you don't want are kept in check by the mower. Rather than planting lots of specials I'm going for the management approach, but then this isn't grass free, just extras in the grass. I find that grasses here are rampant and it would be a nightmare to try and keep more than a very small area grass free. I manage on my beds and borders by using heavy mulching.
Oh and by growing plenty of ornamental ones ;) :)
