I have a cream legbar and the egg shell colour is soooo pretty! Love the old breeds :dbgrtmb:
I also have a cuckoo maran (who is supposed to lay very dark brown eggs) who's mummy hen was obviously caught off guard by a legbar cockeral because she also lays blue/green eggs :dunno:

Traditional breeds go off lay during the winter months (mainly due to the reduced sunlight); having said that, I'm still getting eggs from the Legbar, Maran, one of my Sussex and my Buff Orpington. So, I'm very pleased with these girls :yay:

Battery hens are hybrids specifically bred for a high egg ratio. Poor things are literally worn out from the effort

Eeeerrruuuummm, sorry Ziggy, we do seem to have taken over your thread about recycling feathers but I'm sure you will forgive us this indulgence.
My OH and I drive out into the country about 6 miles to a lovely old tumble down house called Morgay Wood. They have a field where you can pitch your tent or caravan and buy your early morning eggs direct for frying up on your primus stove. As you drive up the long path to the house, chickens are scratching about and their lovely old sheepdog hobbles over to greet you with a grin on his face and his tail gently wagging. We always take back the same egg box and buy 6 eggs for £1. She has rescue hens and some look a bit scrawny for a few weeeks but blossom in this paradise environment. We always come away with that "feelgood factor" and my OH loves his boiled egg and soldiers,
      Jenny

No worries, love chickens as much as leafmold:snork:

Only problem i've had is when they make it onto the top of your head facing backwards.

When you put your hands up to get them off, they open both wings so you can't grab them.:chicken:
