Plenty space to develop without competition and just enough feeding to help them develop without getting soft and floppy.

 

Hiya Dave. Couldn't the same be said for growing them in pots?

 

I guess that would depend on the size and depth of pot and how many seeds are sown.
Well spaced in a deep box I end up with nice healthy plants ready to drop into holes in the garden, and as Kristen has said it's very easy to separate the roots.

I should have added to my last post, that last year I ran out of seeds and didn't have sufficient home grown plants so I went to our local GC and bought a small polystyrene tray that was packed with plants. The bought ones grew to about 1/3rd the thickness of my own ones and were not nearly as green and more of them went to seed before lifting.
