    Do turnips actually taste of anything?

    Yes, they taste of turnip. :dbgrtmb:

    They contain a lot of very healthy vitamins and minerals, especially potassium. They also contain phosphorus, folates, magnesium, calcium and vitamin C. Unlike other root vegetables the turnip tops (greens) are edible, as @NigelJ said)and have a lot of vit A and C. They recommended growing turnip tops during the war. :blue thumb:

    Another old traditional use for growing them is as a barrier to bindweed and horsetail. We tried it, successfully, when we moved here over 50 years ago. They were creeping through the hedge from the jungle garden next door and a local retired gardener, born in the late 1800's, told us about it. He got us a big bag of seeds from a nearby farmer and told us to sow them thickly (you don't get anything edible that way :noidea:). The first year they stopped them coming through and over the next two years there were none growing under the hedge. We've never had a problem with them since :hapydancsmil:

      I like the sound of that. Can feel a very long row of turnips coming on at the edge of the field :biggrin:
