              Only as the leaves are out, John.:coffee: The Red Devils seem to appear when the Lilies are around 3 to 4 inches high. I found 4 today and held a service for them soon after.:dunno::coffee::snork:

                  They are handsome beasts, Java, but they [and especially their larvae] will decimate Lilies and other plants they take residence in. Some say the brilliant red colour is a warning to birds but it also is their downfall as it makes them easy to spot.:coffee::snork:

                    Does anyone know if Ladybird larvae would eat the eggs/larvae of these Lily beetles, or if the beetles might kill them? Thanks!

                    Lily beetles , lay the eggs in the soil close to the host roots for the grub to chew away at , I dont dont know, but taking in to account that 100% of the time you find ladybird larvae eating greenfly on growth above the ground I doubt , I think the best bet would be ground beetles (Carabidae family) that would be more useful in eating eggs etc

                    Hi birdman, The problem with the larvae is that that cover themselves in their own excreta, [which makes using chemicals difficult], but I'm not sure if that acts as a defence against Ladybirds [I don't think that would put off a Ladybird if it had set it's sights on a larva. I have found Ladybirds on Lilies but have never seen them attacking the larvae or being attacked by the Lily Beetle.:dunno::coffee::snork:

                    Thanks @Spruce & @ARMANDII, my Ladybird larvae have done a great job cleaning black aphids off the Cherry tree so moved 4 of them to the Lily pot since seeing green aphids on there. I've had to grab a couple of lily beetles off the lilies in the past (the Venus Flytrap was grateful!) so hope they'll be able to suppress the aphids uninterrupted by the beetles and with any luck also much up any beetle eggs they find...

                      Well, the Larvae will do much more than leave holes in your Lily plants. THC, as they will strip the plants completely for leaves!!:dunno::gaah::snorky:
