If its only an addition to the site I cant see how it can hurt.
If you dont like it, you dont have to use it, but I suspect there could be one or two members out there, who, once they get used to the idea will quite enjoy it.

I think it is a good idea to have a chatroom or, even simpler, to open a new topic called chatroom or live discussion or something along those lines, as it doesn't take too long to post a message so it shouldn't be too hard to have a conversation.
If there is little interest not a big deal, as it would become one of the topic not used too much.
I personally would use it only sometimes, not because I don't enjoy the idea of conversing, but I know that I would't have too much to say in general. But I would rather chat with a gardener from the forum than with somebody completely unknown.

Some of us spend a little time chatting on Allotments4All chatroom and Real Gardeners one too. Never seen either of these being hijacked by outsiders as you have to be members of the site to get to the Chatroom itself. Viruses, as far as I am aware cannot be transmitted in a chatroom, and in any case a good Firewall/anti virus program would pick any up instantly. Mind the converstions are rarely about gardening per se, but range over almost every topic which like minded people want to chat about.
As for using the telephone, well some of us are so phobic about using those things that Chatrooms have become a godsend.

And why is it that I only spot mistakes after I have posted?

Chat rooms are no more insecure than forums. Both depend on proper registration so that only members can contribute. If members then become abusive or commit any other sin, they can be excluded.

Hubby uses Skype all the time. And Messenger. Me wonders how he ever gets any work done?! Guess it explains why he's never in before 7 most nights!

We have a chat room runnng in another forum I mod in and it gets hit by trolls every few months. When it happens it's like that call that goes out in the supermarket for all available staff to man the tills. But then it's a big site (250,000 members) and Christian so it's a subject others love to target. Never the less, the chatroom runs 24/7 and so, I suppose, we don't have too many problems pro rata.

I've used chatrooms otherwise and wasn't too impressed - I found it so intense and you get two or three conversations running concurrently if there's more than a couple of you.

My 17 year old neice seems to revel in them though!

For what its worth I think it would be a good idea BUT- must be for members only.
Or another idea start a thread each day for chat and at a set time each day all posts on the thread are deleted.

A thread that gets deleted each day is probably the best because only registered members can post on it .If the posts are deleted each day at a certain time then the board does not fill up with clutter. Only downside will be the members post count changing when the posts are deleted. Personally I never look at my post count so it would not bother me .

I hate using the phone.I end up looking like a troll before I can pluck up courage to book even a hair appointment.I have got into texting now on the mobile so that is ok.I like to see the face of the person who I am speaking too.It took me some time to get the hang of these computer forums, but I am ok with them now [IMG]
