All lovely, but the candy-striped Ferdinand Pichard is the winner, a striking beauty!

And the scent is glorious, and it's right outside my front door so knocks you back when you come in or go out.

I have tried tying the branch at bottom left as near horizontal as possible, see how the buds are standing up from the main branch; I noticed this trick on some of the roses at Mottisfont, seems to work.
I originally wanted R. Gallica Versicolour (Rosa Mundi) for this spot, but Ferdinand was all they had at the time, I'm very glad now, it has a much longer flowering season, not sure about scent on R.G.V.
The long branches going up are Wisteria.
    Cheers MIKE

I think Liz is getting close there, comaparing yours to the pics of Moss roses, you can see the load of small thorns.
Had a quick look at "Help me Find" but there are 6 pages of Moss roses, but not many pics.
    We will not be beat!!
    Cheers MIKE

Hi Liz and Dorsetmike. I took another picture this morning which is somewhat clearer. Now fully opened they measure just under 3cm across and the buds are about 1cm! Dinky!

I've looked at the Moss roses, Liz, and you could be right there. I cropped in closer on my photo and you can see this tiny spines on all the stems, but they are soft.

When I bought it from the nursery a few years ago, I wanted an orange climber and the guy suggested this as he said it was a miniature climber. Even though they are Dutch, they are not very good with named species. It does grow rigidly upright but I've never seen it over 50-60cm tall.

No, Liz, it doesn't have a scent. If it did, can you imagine when it has 60 blooms per stem like last year?

Do you think cuttings would root?

Mike, I wonder if it smells like cloves as some red and white striped flowers do? I have a pure white pink (sold as a red one!) that smells like cloves.

Hi Kedi, assume you refer to Ferdinand P, I would say the scent is more musk like, for a bit of background and more pics

    see here

    Hi LoL I think I've found it :D :D :D

pic here no indication of flower size though -- however --

    description but no pic here
Looks like a fairly new variety, introduced 2005.

I'm still looking for better pics, not much luck though.
    Cheers MIKE

Good try, Dorsetmike, but I think not .... Rambling Rosie goes to 3 metres / 10 foot tall .... mine has not got over 60cm / 2 feet in the years I've had it.

Thanks for all your efforts ... I think this is a real puzzler! [IMG]

How long have you had it?
I've got a small flowered rambler "Perpetual Blue" had it 18 months, still less than 18" high, supposed to go to 2.5M, last year it did not even repeat flower as it is claimed to do.
Just hoping it goes by the old adage 1st year sleep, 2nd year creep, 3rd year leap.
Think Rambling Rosie is as close as we might get for the time being, most everything else about it seems to fit, just need better pics of RR to see if it has the soft short thorns etc. have to do more research maybe one of RRs parents?
    Cheers MIKE

This is my third year and it was a couple of years old when I got it.

To be honest I don't think this is supposed to go over a metre or so, which is why I bought it for outside the back door. It's virtually thornless.

I wonder who I could contact for a possible ID, although I contacted a specialist on Rhododendons, Azaleas and Camillias recently for my Azalea and they came back and said it was lovely but had never seen such before!
