Some unions are better than others, but not attending your meeting is bad PR and he/she should be sacked.
Many years ago I was Honorary Branch Secretary of an Employers Federation, I managed to recover a large sum of money for one of our members (a sub-contractor) from a Main Contractor. It wasn't a difficult job, just knowing who to speak to (the actual owner of the Main Contractor, not the manager).

About 12 years later I was Branch Secretary of a very large union when two members were threatened with dismissal. I managed to save one of them. We were later involved in a strike and without knowing anything about it, I was provided with a bodyguard (one of our big, tough members) by management.

In my experience there is no difference between being Union Secretary and being Federation Secretary, you need the same skills. I might add that because of the respect I had for our union I am still a member, 22 years after leaving.

    well a little update !

we were starting back work on monday morning but........................... now are not !

had a phone call from wedgwoods on friday afternoon telling me not to go into work

we have to attend a meeting at 12 o clock and not to park on wegdwood property we have to park the car on the main road !

i have also heard that there are a few meetings been carried out during the day staff been at 9.30 AM

i have really bad vibes about this meeting :(

i think they are going to wipe over half of us out to be honest

they are also bringng there own management in so my manager (also my sister in law) is 100% convinced she will be gone when we arrive at 12

and also with hearing they are getting shut of people on monday im wondering if they have found a loop hole in TUPE as i really do feel that the people they get rid of will not be leaving with there full redundancy package

as there were 354 people been made redundant on average each person was getting £10000 each some more some less but thats a hell of alot of money to pay out before even starting to turn the company round !

as far as we have been told we still have our full contract and terms and conditions but im wondering how we stand now as we are in between the administrators and the new buyers !

oh well another sleepless night tonight then we will know our fate i hate all this waiting and messing about.

my friend has also told me that she is not entitled to dole as her boyfriend who she lives with has another property !

thats disgusting regardless to if she needs the money or not she has payed in and worked all her life and also i have been told that after paying morgage protection for 14 yrs on my morgage if the dole are aware of this we may not get dole either !

god roll on summer so i have some plants to talk to and toms to ask how there day has been lol :yho:

i hate winter its so lonely without my leafy friends

and no im not nuts well not far off but i bet you lot have a good convo with your plants

well if your still awake after reading this

thankyou and hope your all well

    lisa

Oh Lisa, fingers crossed for tomorrow. Fancy not being able to even park there! Well let us know what happens.

BTW, even if you don't get dole you will get something - unless you've got lots of savings. Try not to worry too much, you will survive.

    cheers

Lisa I have fingers crossed that you will get a good deal and your Trade Union is on the ball.
I am told not being allowed to use the car park is common practice in these circumstances but also surprise that the meeting is being held in the factory!
    :gnthb:Good luck to everyone concerned.:)

Hi Cattwoman - so sorry to hear about your troubles and hope it turns out OK

Its a horrible shock. To look on the positive side - its not life threatening, and as long as your have your health and your family and your sense of humour yet will get by.
