Hello @Katherine, welcome to the forum:)

Are you sure your neighbours are not aliens? That doesn't look like the kind of satellite dish you'd pick telly signals up through. I wonder if they are stranded here and are trying to establish communication with their home world.

It is quite clear that they expect to be gone home soon because of where they've put their dish. They can't use their garden because doing so would involve standing in front of the dish and blocking the signal, and because they can't go in their garden it will soon become overgrown, thus once again blocking their signal.

In the meantime, maybe mask it off with something like a buddleja or maybe bamboo. Something tall that wont mind growing at the foot of that tree. I'd be careful about going for anything too showy, because you might not want to draw the eye to that spot or else you'll either be all the more aware of The Dish, or if whatever you hide it with is dense, it will be obvious you're masking something, drawing your attention once again to, The Dish.

:heehee: No, I doubt its S4C Zigs - I was thinking more along the lines of Rai Uno etc. Its been many a long year (well, at least 16!) since I was involved in installing these babies, so no doubt things have moved on a bit, but the principles must be about the same.

@clueless1 - anyone who wants to have a system like this has no option but to use their garden for it, as mounting such a dish on a building would be nigh on impossible, not least because it would act like a great big sail in high winds. They are obviously dedicated TV fans though, as such an installation is quite a costly business - you need to build a flat and level concrete base, run ducting to carry the cables, then bolt a suitable mounting pole onto the concrete base and attach the dish and motor system to that; and that is before you take into account the actual cost of all the equipment.

Like I said, aliens. There's more TV channels than we can possibly consume these days on a combination of geostationary satellites and broadband interweb.

According to this website http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/permission/commonprojects/antenna/ , you need planning permission if "it is more than 100 centimetres in any linear dimension (not including any projecting feed element, reinforcing rim, mounting and brackets); "

From your picture, that dish looks a lot bigger than 1m across. I'd be tempted to raise the question with my local authority planning enforcement officer. It might not be very good for neighbour relations though.

Pyracantha (firethorn) can fairly quickly form a dense bush seven or eight feet high. You do have to trim them once or twice a year otherwise they push out long thorny branches but they seem to tolerate it without much problem. There's also the advantage that it'll be pushing long thorny branches out on their side:paladin:

That dish is silly. Can you find out who their landlord is if they're renting, and get in touch with them direct? It would be interesting if the landlord knows the extent of the size of the dish they've agreed to be installed, if they are even aware of it. They'd need the agreement of them to make a change like that to the property and they'd be more receptive to the landlord asking them to do something about it :)

My first thought was that they might be foreign? I remember when Sky/BSB first came out, and some neighbours couldn't get their language channels so had multiple dishes

What's it attached to? Would definitely drop the landlord a line. If that fails I'd be tempted to lean out your top window with an air rifle...
