In the back in the veg area is clay..but strange enough is not the same in the front nor in that section in the picture. So must be a clay type didnt think about that is that now a problem. If need be can always buy what is needed to help things along. This area is an old village a lot of elderly so they have a low maintenance gardens some have bushes or flowers. Maybe I could go for a walk and take pictures and hopefully noone will see me lol. As for colours no ideas will see what there are at the time.

I have (slightly acidic) clay soil front and back and have lots of Rhododendrons. If it's clay you would need to improve the soil though as it doesn't drain very well. I dig in multi purpose compost to a spade's depth, then make a large planting hole and mix in ericaceous compost with the soil, then fill in. About an inch from the top of the hole I sprinkle the Miracle Gro food then cover with the rest of the soil/compost mix.

The bit in your front garden is raised so it may be that topsoil was added to get to that level which would explain why it's not the same as at the back.

Photos would be good - if anybody catches you just tell them that you are looking for plant ideas and were admiring their beautiful garden. Good way to get some free advice :blue thumb:

When you decide on a colour I can recommend the Millais nursery website - www.rhododendrons.co.uk (I use it as a reference when I'm searching for new Rhodos). You can search by colour, flowering period, size etc. The advice centre give lots of useful advice on planting and looking after Rhodos too :)

Can't really tell from the pics, but someone may be able to identify them if you post in the identification section :blue thumb:
