Very excited, just found a very pretty hanging basket hook already on the wall! I've never noticed it! Winter baskets are go!

People must be getting seriously bored of constant nattering on here, but i can't help myself, so i'll keep going.

Just been to the garden centre, its limited as its quite diddy, and of course not exactly 'in season' but i had a rummage around, took lots of notes, asked lots of questions and annoyed the customer assistants with my childish excitement.

Carry on nattering Whiley. If the members of GC just wanted facts on plants we would just Google everything. And boy would that be boring.

On Roundup can I just add that Wilkos do a systemic w.killer with identical chemical makeup for abot two thirds the price (Wilkos should pay me commission on recommendations). I think it is Bayer. And Pro Gard is right of course, it doesn't hang around in the soil or compost.

Your First Plant is a hydranga, in mid Feb cut back growth overall by 2/3rds and take out a few old branches from the base, also cut out any dead wood.

Your tree is a weeping flowering cherry

As for bedding plants, petunia, bizie lizze, snap dragon, tobaco plant, aduratum. you could even try sunflowers in pots.

Hi Whiley as Pro Gard says to get the best from your hydranga it's best to hack the thing back when it's dormant early spring and then this will give it the boost to look lovely next year.

If you have plenty of brass to spend on your 'new' plot then how about once you have 'done' the safe weed killing act you have a look around for some alpines?

Alpines are mostly evergreen of which if you live near a 'cheap' nursery you can pick them up for about 75p for a good size plant, some even are variegated, they are great ground cover your bulbs can even be planted underneath them and of course most are perennials so no need to constantly keep putting your hand in your pocket for each year's show....so unlike summer bedding plants that can cost you an arm and a leg for a decent amount unless you have a green house to grow your own!

As you might be able to tell I do love these plants and have quite a few in my gardens although no way near as many as Palustris on here...... now that's a person who could really recommend and sing the praises of the alpines!

Oh and as for nattering too much dear me...there's no such thing in my book you couldn't possibly natter enough! :D

I wonder if your beloved postie is as crazy as ours... even when it's snowing he wears his shorts and is always game for a laugh! :D

Haha my Darren is a nutty ****** and usually has his legs out but hes feeling the cold right now, so making him wear a scarf :D He can pull it off though, kinda looks trendy in it [IMG]

Keep me nattering! As you can see by my constant posts, i'm in love with this forum and i am so eagar for replies and to learn more!

I've spotted some alpines at the nursery, and i really like them. I'm really tempted by them so i might get a few nice small ones for the bedding plant areas like you suggest! I'm falling for cordys too, such a statement of a plant!
