I didn't mean you personally, Stephen, I was referring the fact that you can't avoid meeting someone you in your life time who's not liking you!!

Maggie was not known for accepting any other persons opinions or policies I'm afraid:dunno::snork:

Perhaps one of our more talented people here could set up a voting poll to what a cross section of people think

As someone who also gained when she sold off council housing I'd just like to make a couple of points.
Firstly, I agree council housing was sold and at the time, I believe, councils were told to sit on any money they made from the sales, so therefore it wasn't used to build new ones.
Bearing in mind that she has been out of power since 1990 or so, I've not noticed councils rushing to build new ones in the last 20 or so years, around here its been throw onto housing authorities to do that.

I also believe that a good amount of the housing stock sold back in the 80s was in need of modernisation, something councils were not prepared to pay for. Selling it off got them off the hook.
I believe its still possible to buy your council house at a preferential price, so.......:)

Yes, up North, in Wales, etc., etc., but not the case down South where the remaining jobs were/are. And raising interest rates to 15% in 1990 would have helped keep prices down, but other stuff like that seems to have been forgotten, like a recession, double digit inflation and a failing economy, which was why she was chucked out.

P.S. Personally, such 'Thatcherism' would really benefit me these days as I own my house outright (high interest rates wouldn't affect me), have substantial savings (whoo hoo, loadsa 15% interest) and have an inflation indexed pension (so big 10%+ increases every year), and I live in rural area away from inner-city riots and far from communities devastated by massive unemployment and blighted by high levels of drug abuse, crime, etc.

Sorry don`t think it`s a good idea for a poll of members, politics and religion the great dividers, we are all united in our love of gardening, we don`t need divisive polls.

I've just read an estimate of £8 million. Is Tony Blair going to have a similar affair?

On another forum I use, civil war has broke out on their Thatcher thread. We'll have to be careful here. It seems even in death she can still divide the population into two warring factions. Lets not let that happen here. She's dead. She shouldn't be able to affect anyone or anything any more.

Although I would also prefer the thread to be closed (I don't think it does us any good stirring up old enmities) I don't think it has been divisive because our members have enough sense to be careful - and the Mods are watching :heehee:. They removed the totally tasteless post that was offensive no matter who had died, and I congratulate them for that :blue thumb: .

I wouldn't be upset should this thread be closed now because most points of view have probably been covered and it could very easily degenerate from what's so far been a bit of banter/exchange of views into a very emotive issue.

Why do we get calls to close a thread where proper discussion is taking place, I for one would give up on GC if every thread that caused real discussion was closed, if you dont like what you see on a certain thread it is very easy not to look.;)
Strikes me strange that members are asking for a thread to be closed, but at the same time obviously reading every post?
If not, how can they judge it needs closing?;)

The Mods are doing a good job keeping out anything really offensive as usual.:blue thumb:

To be honest, in most cases, members make it easy for us Admin because they usually keep to the principle of discussing rather than arguing, and everyone seems to recognise how divisive such a subject is. We try to intervene as little as possible only acting when we think offense has been caused and there is danger to the good humour, harmony and spirit of GC. We rarely close a thread or delete a post and any request to do so is, I assure you, mulled over and examined before any action, of any kind, is taken. I'm not a political animal by any means and don't "nod" in the direction of any political party as Politicians and Political Parties have never solved any of this country's problems, only caused them, and in doing so have raised taxes and lowered society's quality of life........but that's only my opinion.:coffee::snork:
