Not true @Scrungee ,we used to have a baskets only check out.
I tried to go through with a trolley with two boxes of beer.
The miserable old person on the till shouted out BASKETS ONLY.
I only had two items, most people in the queue had lots more.

So I pointed this out to customer services on my way out, after spending ages behind people doing a monthly shop.
They have since made it 10 items or less.

Various. The simple answer is "poet" - which explains everything. But the longer one is - Semi-pro writer, community centre worker, occasional film maker & local radio rambler, also working as a researcher for a national radio & tv company, but that is on an as-and-when basis. My current job with them is fixing up interviews with actors from tv soap operas. During lockdown/covid I've been working a coronavirus helpline via my community centre job, mainly allocating food & medicine deliveries for those who cannot leave their homes, but dealing with all manner of other advice too. This involves a great deal of liaison with medical professionals and others, which may go some way to explaining my preference for pinning down facts from the knowledgeable and qualified when it comes to this sort of issue. We are sometimes asked about things like masks and it is no joke, as I'm sure you can imagine. I worked for 4 years as a nursing assistant though I have no medical qualifications myself.

[QUOTE="That's probably because we're not scientists and most of us don't have first hand experience from a medical point of view Simon.[/QUOTE]

Exactly. That's why I'm eager to follow the medics' advice and hear only factual reasons for or against. I find it bizarre that many people, who wouldn't fail to follow medical advice from their GP, are content to wave away the scientific consensus and shun masks, as if they are somehow placed to know better than the WHO, the BMA etc, even if they lack any qualifications whatsoever. I'm sure they would be miffed if their knowledge in their own field of work was dismissed so carelessly. I'm unqualified and inexperienced - that's precisely why I place my trust in those with qualifications and experience.

Our supermarket changed theirs after I pointed out to the manager that, technically, I should be barred from carrying an item or two to the checkout if I didn't have a basket. :heehee:

I don't think a lot of people do actually follow the advice of their GP.
If they did there would be less over weight people about.
Lots of us would drink less alcohol we often take on advice but don't always follow it
We are not perfect, well I'm not anyway, I know it's hard to believe.

Can someone explain why when replying to Simon the quote never comes out as it should.

Okay, now I'm totally confused. Just why are we even discussing this if only medical recommendations from the real professionals should be those followed, according to @SimonZ and why does he keep wanting to discuss amateur opinions if that is really how he feels? Why is this debate being held in a gardening forum thread and not in a health related one? Is this a test to see how long kind gardeners can be prodded into keeping a discussion going no matter how much it is resembling a continuous loop? It seems to me that it is getting a bit silly :rolleyespink: Wear a mask when near others. Wash your hands. Keep things clean. Easy peasy!

Did you mean your post#189 above where you appear to have attempted to quote the whole of post #185, but the first 'quote' (of Sheal) in that post has been edited, so doesn't display properly as a quote of part of another post (like above), and when that 'quote' is quoted makes it appear to be quoting Simon and not Sheal.

                        Code:
[QUOTE="That's probably because we're not scientists and most of us don't have first hand experience from a medical point of view Simon.[/QUOTE]
Which should have been left as
                        Code:
[QUOTE="Sheal, post: 1270768, member: 14"]That's probably because we're not scientists and most of us don't have first hand experience from a medical point of view Simon.[/QUOTE]
To get a quote of that post to display properly would require a manual edit of the BBCode, and to get a nested quote would require additional BBCode

                        Is that what you meant?

With a sad shake of head, a handful of ashes, I have now burned the various diaries I had compiled over the years. "Pete's advise" collection no longer clutters my bookshelf. [IMG]

Moving on, regardless of the efficiency of the masks it is a clear sign of common decency and respect for others. Just like the people who give you a wide berth on a crowded footpath, a cheery smile and a bit of banter maybe. It does lift the spirit.

                              No,well,it might be.
What I meant was, why has Simon's post come out in the same writing as mine, it looks like I wrote all of it apart from the quote at the top.
