My OH gave me a small metal gazebo for my birthday last September for my garden in Dordogne, France. I had fun choosing roses for it. My rose order, for other places in the garden too, arrived and I heeled them in to the vegetable garden.

I had already planted Strawberry Hill and Iceberg but it kept raining and we were going to 2nd OH's cottage in Norfolk in January. First OH died in 1998. Met 2nd OH 10 years later, but he lives in Norfolk and I live in Dordogne. Now we are back in France so this afternoon I planted Chevy Chase and Open Arms on the gazebo. It took me 1h30 as the soil is heavy and needed compost dug in and the holes had to be dug in the lawn. Also I must be careful as I hurt my back about 2 weeks ago.

I still have Blush Noisette and Herman Schmidt to plant, they are still heeled in. Then I have 4 potted roses to plant. I will be making a new mixed shrub, rose and perennial bed in the lawn.

I bought this house, downsized, 3 years ago and I've been making the garden. There were 3 roses, now there are 44. OH had 7 roses, I've planted 13 more. I love roses.

My daughter has over 120 roses. She lives near Poitiers in France. Are you a professional gardener @wiseowl ?

I had about 70 roses at my old house and I opened my garden for the French Open Gardens like the NGS, but smaller.

I planted Hermann Schmidt today where the orchard fence is at a right angle with the veg garden fence. Had to dig up the grass to make a little bed for it. Very heavy clay, had to dig in loads of compost and manure. The repeat flowering pink rambling rose is to be trained in both directions along the fences.

I bought this potted rose yesterday, winter potted bare root, so it's not supposed to be planted out until June, but we can get around that with care. It will only suffer a short shock before recovering.

..it's barely shooting out, so it will hardly notice the transplant..

..best for the east side, as it doesn't look great with too much rain on the opening blooms, however we can get around that with a touch of inventiveness when the time comes..[tongue in cheek]...

                (Little bit of Trivia)
created in 1843 by Lyon rose breeder Jean Béluze, who named it after the Château de Malmaison, where Joséphine de Beauharnais (1763–1814) had created a magnificent rose garden.

I managed to snag a Lady Emma Hamilton! I hope. It was on ebay, so... We'll see what comes up.
She wasn't a happy lady after shipping, but I'm happy to see some signs of life.
She's by far my least advanced rose, but so long as she makes it (and isn't an imposter) it's all good.
I'm usually not keen on peach or orange roses, but LEH made my heart skip a beat.

@MoodyBlooms I'd keep an eye on the little cluster of leaves at the bottom. It could be a sucker from the rootstock as it seems to have too many leaflets

Ooh, good to know! When/how will I know if it's a sucker? (Sorry, I'm still very much a newbie with roses. Gardening in general, really)

Good afternoon @MoodyBlooms Suckers (shoots produced from the rootstock) will develop from below ground level, and their leaves will often differ in appearance from those of the rest of the plant. For example, they may be a different colour (often paler) and/or have a different number of leaflets. if it is a sucker please pull it off if you cut it off it could very well grow again

Spring juvenile foliage, even on young roses, can be a joy to behold.. especially in this 'Silas Marner'..
