I would like to grow a rose in a container (38cm top diameter, 24cm bottom diameter and 31cm tall). The only place I can have it is in front of a 6 foot fence and facing north-east. Quite a sheltered spot. I would be grateful for any suggestions. Long flowering and fragrant would be good! Many thanks.

I think, @daisym, that could be quite tricky. The pot is on the small side for a rose. You could start it in that pot but it would have to be moved into a bigger one in year or two. Roses have quite deep roots. I used to grow them in 50 to 60 cm pots, deep and wide. When I moved house I gave my potted roses to my daughter. I had to take them out of the pots for transporting, it was winter, and most of the roots had reached the bottoms of the pots.

The other thing is that if the rose is on the north east side of the fence it will be in shade for a lot of the time. Most roses prefer to be in the sun. Look on a site like Peter Beales or David Austin for roses that grow in shade. They tend to tolerate shade but will have fewer flowers.

I've loved this rose of yours since I first saw it on that other forum.

Thanks @Busy-Lizzie That is very helpful (but not what I was hoping to hear!).
I have this big pot which is lying empty and I could picture a rose in it, but perhaps I need to rethink what to put in it as I do not have anywhere else to place the pot. My Chandos Beauty is against the same fence, but because of the angle of the fence, it does get plenty sunshine - if there is any! Thanks. I will look for a more suitable plant.

The anticipation is agonising! I have a few small blooms out on Penelope, Etoile de Hollande and Zepherine Drouhin. The others are tantalizing near to opening but is of course only early May so they are early this year. My new Ghislaine de felingord is looking very, very promising.

..this is ''Surpassing Beauty''.. possessing one of the strongest scents in old 19thC roses..
                      IMG_1956.JPG

'Kathleen Harrop'.. a lighter version of 'Zephirine Drouhin'.. and I think a better scent .. delicious.
                      IMG_1961.JPG

'Desdemona'.. also nicely scented at this time of year, quite unusual, both floral and fruity.
                      IMG_1971.JPG

..first bloom on 'Lucky'.. a floribunda..
                      IMG_1959.JPG

..and 'Forever Royal'.. another floribunda.. sweetly scented..
