A song of the Great Depression Era

They used to tell me I was building a dream, and so I followed the mob,
When there was earth to plough, or guns to bear, I was always there right on the job.
They used to tell me I was building a dream, with peace and glory ahead,
Why should I be standing in line, just waiting for bread?

Once I built a railroad, I made it run, made it race against time.
Once I built a railroad; now it's done. Brother, can you spare a dime?
    Once I built a tower, up to the sun, brick, and rivet, and lime;
Once I built a tower, now it's done. Brother, can you spare a dime?
Once in khaki suits, gee we looked swell,
Full of that Yankee Doodly Dum,
Half a million boots went slogging through Hell,
And I was the kid with the drum!

Say, don't you remember, they called me Al; it was Al all the time.
Why don't you remember, I'm your pal? Buddy, can you spare a dime?
Once in khaki suits, gee we looked swell,
Full of that Yankee Doodly Dum,
Half a million boots went slogging through Hell,
And I was the kid with the drum!

Say, don't you remember, they called me Al; it was Al all the time.
Say, don't you remember, I'm your pal? Buddy, can you spare a dime?

The chorus from another song of that era

      Nobody knows you,
      When you're down and out.
In you pocket, not one penny.
And your friends, you don't have any.

But if you ever get on your feet again,
Then you'll find your long lost friends.
It's mighty strange, without a doubt.
Nobody knows you when your down and out,
I mean when you're down and out.

Such beautiful lyrics should be enjoyed by everyone.
From the Christmas classic.....Faitytale of old New York.....:ccheers:

        You're a bum
        You're a punk
You're an old slutt on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
        You scumbag, you maggot
        You cheap lousy faggot
        Happy Christmas your arsee
        I pray God it's our last .

This is only for fans ;)

          Spring is here
          Spring is here
Life is skittles and life is beer
          I think the loveliest time
Of the year is the spring
I do, don't you? 'Course you do
          But there's one thing
That makes spring complete for me
          And makes every Sunday
          A treat for me.

All the world seems in tune
          On a spring afternoon...

I was walking down the street one day. When two police men came my way. They said is your name Henry and I said why sure, they said we'll you're the boy we've been looking for.

I was framed. Framed framed framed, yeah I was framed, framed framed framed. Well I never do nothing, but I always get the blame.

@clueless1 those words are very similar to the ones by Canned Heat, but with them it was big bad Burton Cummings . Who was yours by? :)

It's a long time since I've heard it but I'm fairly sure it was Eddie Cochrane.

I got both the words and the artist wrong.

I remembered it from the film la bamba, telling the story of Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly and co so I Googled on that basis.
