The succulent with the pink / purple flowers looks like a Lampranthus.

hi lady of leisure in portugal...( i wish for your lifestyle) kandyfloss hit the nail on the head i think when she said it was "Hottentot Fig" but lampranthus could be its real name i suppose... i saw it on the sand dunes near alicante amongst the agaves... as well as on the cliff faces in cornwall....it's well travelled i think...along highways in california also i believe!!

Hi, Steve. I have since looked up the Hottentot Fig and it's a Carpobrotus edulis. Although they are both from South Africa, the Hottentot can take cooler temperatures than the Lampranthus, requiring a minimum temp of 36oF, which is what you see in Spain and Portugal.

[IMG] Hi Steve, Hotentot Figs seem to get all over the place. Yes they are along the California coast as well as around our own... The are a member of the Mesembryantheumum Family (Aizoaceae). As long as you keep them frost free & watered with some sunshine, they will romp away. \They root from cuttings really easily. I let the end dry over for a day or so, then dip in a little rooting liquid & plant in some gritty well draining compost . Have not had any falures yet...... They also will root from bits that are laid on the ground too.... :D

I tried hottentot fig in the garden some years back ant it never survived here, apart from one grown very close to the house in the rain shadow of the eves.
As for the albizia Steve, I think its starvation, there not really suitable for pots as far as I'm concerned.
I had a plant that grew like crazy and flowered every year, it had really wonderful dark green leaves. It was planted out as a seedling and as such had a massive tap root, a bit like a carrot but much bigger.
I know that because I had to dig it out, I've never matched that one by growing in pots.

pete I always thought that mine would run out of steam in a pot, but whilst watering the tree ferns this evening I noticed it was budding up to flower, yipeeeeeeeeeeeeee! I will probably put it in the ground next year.
But for now its going to get a good liquid feed for those flowers.
