Minimal set of tools for a new allotment

    Hi all,

    I just got assigned my very first allotment. I now need some tools. It is not my first 'garden' (I used to have one when living in the south of Europe) but I am unsure about the minimal set of tools needed for starting with an allotment and where to buy them.

    I was just googling around for a normal hoe and found a wide range of prices plus some specific model I have never seen before (like the 'dutch hoe').

    Who can help me with this?

    On my allotment I have a Fork, Spade and rake and a pair of secateurs. I could do with a hoe but just carry my one from home. Once a year for pruning blackberries I bring a big pair of loppers from home. That's all I need, oh and a hose (assuming you have mains water).

    A dutch hoe looks like this:

    and works on the 'push' only.

    I prefer this Wolf multi tool hoe (attaches to a handle) it works 'pull' and 'push':

      And don't forget your rubber boots and perhaps some gloves.

      When you get working on your plot you will have time to see what others find handy and then you can decide what else you need :)

        The absolute minimum would be a coffee flask.


        But if you must have tools check out any local car boot sales or auctions where you can get lots for peanuts ..

          Begin with a fork and a spade. These will be the two you use the most. Then add to the collection as you need a specific tool or when you come across second hand ones or see good offers.

            When I first got my allotment I bought really cheap fork and spade because I was worried about them getting stolen. At home I use a nice stainless steel spade but they are £20 plus. As it turned out my allotment site is secure and we have few problems, so just a word of warning, to begin with don't invest too much.

              Good gloves
              Loppers
              Hand saw ( branches etc)
              Secateurs
              Good flask (or camping stove)
              Maybe a secure shed
              And a comfy deck chair (sit back and admire your work)
