"Ah, the little dears. These are just a FEW mole deterrents we have which include explosives, poison, traps and a noise machine. As you can see from the bottom right corner, they work!!"

I thought this was a joke until I read further posts. The concept of controlling every living organism on your land through methods like that is absurd. You may as well put up a tourist information board so that all creatures great and small can find out if they are welcome or not on the patch they occupied first!

Blasting aphids off the roses with a hose is one thing but traps and poisons? No thanks.

Quote ââ?¬Å?ââ?¬ÂThe concept of controlling every living organism on your land through methods like that is absurd. ââ?¬Å?ââ?¬Â

I couldnââ?¬â?¢t agree more TO. But I wasnââ?¬â?¢t aware that trying to clear the moles was controlling every living organism. I am trying to conserve worms ââ?¬â?? doesnââ?¬â?¢t that mean something has to go? I could just let the whole plot revert back to an unkempt and unloved field but then what would be the point of living in the house if the land around it was a no-go area. I think common sense should prevail here.

I DO NOT use insecticides EVER or any form of weed control unless absolutely necessary. I get down on my hands and knees with an old kitchen knife and dig them out one by one. Now, this is not easy for me since I am disabled ââ?¬â?? but thatââ?¬â?¢s another story. I have a conservation area at the end of my plot where moles live quite happily amongst the wild flowers (a.k.a. weeds). There is even an old log pile for hedgehogs. I donââ?¬â?¢t have a fence around three quarters of the garden so if a passing deer wants to graze it can ââ?¬â?? thankfully it doesnââ?¬â?¢t happen too often. (Although we did get a herd of cows once which had escaped from the local farm). The odd wild boar comes by but stays in the field beyond our land. So, I think all in all I shouldnââ?¬â?¢t be pilloried for wanting to protect my worms, my plants and my bank balance.

Besides, the mole was caught in the humane trap and we took it to a nice forest to spend the rest of its days in peace. I could have bonked it over the head with a spade or let the dog play with it for a while before ripping it to shreds but just because Ive tried inhumane ways of catching the mole doesnt mean Im Freddie Kruger.

I wonder, TO, do you ever swat a fly?

P.S. I must apologize to you, WOO, as your thread appears to shooting off on a tangent.

Perhaps it would be more appropriate for someone to start a new thread to discuss the rights and wrongs suggested here. Although it wont be me, Im sure I would have something to say.

For all you mole lovers out there the answer is mothballs. When you see a mole hill, dig down into the run and place a mothball in it, they hate the smell of camphor. Guaranteed to work without the nucleur deterent. David.
