You'll know it if you get it, Colin!

It's a fungal infection affecting toms and spuds. The leaves and stems develop brown splodges and streaks. Then the fruit. Then it spreads, and the whole plant rots and dies. Sometimes it can happen almost overnight, from infection to complete devastation.

There's nothing you can do to stop it once it takes hold, apart from picking some of your harvest straight away, and hoping it's OK.

The best way to prevent it is to spray with Bordeaux mix (A copper based fungicide) every couple of weeks from early summer onwards.

I think the problem with Moneymaker is it was bred for crop size and not for flavour.
It's just the same as those red, round and 8 to the pound tomatoes on sale in the supermarket.
    I don't grow it.

I grew my moneymaker outside ,and still thought they were tasteless :skp:

In the greenhouse I grew some sweet millions, got the seed from "wilkos" and they live up to the name, very tiny sweet lovely tomatoes.

I also grew some "chocolate cherry" , :luv: (I got the seed from the seed parcel) and they are lovely ping pong ball size ,dark brownish skin ,and a lovely sweet taste , I will be saving the seed from them and hopefully (see other post) will grow them again next year .

I stopped growing "gardeners delight" as I too found them tasteless

Well, I certainly shan't be growing either in the greenhouse again - back to Shirley and Ailsa Craig next year.

I grew some Minibel tomatoes for the first time this year, only reason the seed was a freebie with Gardeners World magazine. I wish I hadn't bothered as they were tasteless, same as Moneymaker. Although it goes against my Yorkshire blood, I pulled the plants up a couple of weeks ago and threw them in the compost even though they were packed with ripening fruit.

Dai you are wrong about Moneymaker being an outdoor variety, it was specifically bred for the British greenhouse commercial growers. As its name suggests in those days they were more interested in quantity rather than quality.

Thank you all for your replies. Moneymaker apparently dates from 1912. I'm sure it was great for the war effort but perhaps it's time it was consigned to the compost heap for good - although my OH said the fruit was ok fried!

My Mum says she can remember my Grandad growing Moneymaker-sized tomatoes which ripened to a golden colour, like the cherry tomato 'Sungold', and were absolutely delicious. Unfortunately she can't remember what it was called. Has anyone come across it?

    Hi Colin,

Looks like they've got out of focus disease. :hehe:

Back to reality, they don't look blighted, mine have got definate dark brown patches that extend to the core when you cut them.

I don't think the flavour of moneymaker is bad & thats coming from someone who dislikes raw tomatoes. Love tomato sauce, purree, soup etc., just don't like em raw.
