    Sandy old man beard is a kind of wild clematis round here. I think you mean old man cactus ;)
    They're usually covered in masses of white hairs.

    :D Wow Pete the cacti are wonderful :D :D I went to a botanic garden last year hols on the CA coast have wanted to go there for years & was amazed by these ones. The tall one in the middle are about 6' tall [​IMG] [​IMG] [​IMG] I only have a couple of cacti at the moment but want to get some more. :D

    Hi Marley, yeah I've been there myself, they really grow well in the hot dry climates dont they.......Then I suppose they should.... a lot of them come from there. :D

    One more last one, this time a Stapelia, stinks to high heaven and attracts blue bottles from miles around.

    The 1st is so pretty pete, but the 2nd, stinks........ :confused: attracts flys......... :confused: yuk.. :D :D amazing what nature comes up with :D :D More pics the merrier I say, keep 'em coming everyone :D :D

    The one right at the back looks a bit old at the base (says steve edging his bets [​IMG] )

    Ferrocactus Emoryi, Your right Fran, 25 years old that one from seed.
    The two big ones at the back are only 20 yrs old.
    The two front right are only about 10 yrs old, they are Carnegiea Gigantea, the old saguaro of the old westerns.
    Yes the spines are a bit vicious Steve, been caught on them hooked central spines many times when repotting, once your hooked you have to push into the other spines to release the hook, all good fun. :D
