@sandymac is right. It is only standing water that is perfect for breeding. That is why my bird bath has a solar pump to keep the water agitated. I would never give up providing nice drinks or baths for birds and the pleasure of watching them.

It does seem a tad early for mozzies in northern UK, but if a neighbour has a pond or some other source of stagnant water, then guppies could be the answer. Tiny fish that devour the larvae. Very effective and very prolific, so should never be used anywhere that they can escape into a watercourse. As for water butts, various solutions like a fine mesh cover, permanganate of potassium, etc. But obviously you need to know where the source is!

@Bradders, I still don’t see any photos from you of what you have in your garden - just photos sourced from the internet. So we cannot comment on what insects you are being “plagued” by.

We are generally ahead of southern UK in insects here, but I have only seen a few midges and mozzies so far. You say “whitefly” and “blackfly”, but then show photos of mosquitos and hoverflies, so I’m really confused as to what problems you are having?

In short, more info is required - but please hold off any more spraying of insecticide!
