Thunked you might like to know. We took the machine to our tame mechanic and after stripping it down and finding nothing wrong with Electronics, carb, plug and it still not running, he discovered that the gizmo on the side of the carb which controls the engine running speed was stuck in the start up position. He said that he had never seen this happen before. when he freed it and sprayed it with WD40 it moved to the correct place when the machine was started. Problem solved.

 You know chaps if the clutch is out of adjustment it will drag which will cause the engine to work harder.. Get hotter quicker & only just chugg as it is working hard biut being slowed by the clutch.... I think you do need to check the clutch Chris... You never know if your plug gap is right & your mixture or fuel is right it sounds like the clutch first carb problems 2nd.. I have an in line fuel filter on mine before it gets to the carb...... Sounds like yours could have been an air to fuel ratio then palustris or mixture as I think of it...

Well, as I was getting nowhere I bit the bullet and toook it into the local repair shop. There were dark mutterings about the crankshaft being bent and the machine being a write-off asnd I feared the worst. However, I was pleased to get a phone call later saying that the machine had been serviced, a a new diaphram had been fitted to the carb and it was running sweetly. It cost me, but it was still cheaper than a new mower. I cut the grass this evening and, phew, it was fine. I hope yours is running well now too Palustris.

There is a governor on the carb which changes the start up speed of the engine to its running speed. It had stuck in the start up position so the engine was not reaching its proper working speed. I will not be using it for a few days, a. it is raining and b. I scalped the grass(well moss, clover, daisy, dandelion, buttercup, potentilla, self heal, etc. mixture we call a lawn) on Tuesday, it is still yellow!
My mechanic was very inexpensive, useful having a son who used to service lawnmowers for a job.
