I was very surprised last year when we lost at least 1,000 Aquilegias! This year they seemed to be doing OK but the heavy frost that we had the other day has affected some of them quite badly. They used to survive the worst of winters

We, now, have some additional entertainment on the Saturday. Solo Salsa! I suppose it will be similar to the way our Flamenco dancers perform - without partners.

I have observed a clump of this in the grounds of the Hospice where I work every Thursday and no, it stays pretty compact without spreading,

Related to Japanese Knotweed ... but stays put. It does make quite a large amount of summer growth (Year 2 onwards) but dies back in winter (like a normal herbaceous plant).

It is possible that where it comes into contact with the ground, during the summer, that it might root, but it doesn't send out underground runners (well ... not that I have seen as yet!)

Here's my modest little clump that I planted last year. I didn't like the stinking iris that was there - too scruffy and most unattractive. I think this looks brighter and more pleasant,

I took my camera with me today and this is the Persicara in the Hospice grounds. The gardener told me it's about 6 years old,

Going back to the Box blight chat. I went to a garden in Kent last weekend. They had formal gardens and borders along with a parterre area. The parterre had serious blight issues, parts were totally defoliated, some looking like it was on its way out. Still the area tightly clipped. In the hedges and borders were Box that had never been clipped, very tall and unkempt BUT they looked as healthy as any Box i had ever seen. I'm beginning to think that you need to be so careful nowadays when clipping Box, once a year only, in May in a dry period. It maybe worth having a slightly unkempt Box hedge rather that no Box at all.

Moved perennial today, good gardening day. Still got gaps to fill with something new.

Must say, a little bit of rain really brings the garden to life.

I must say its looking good today. Love this time of year, fresh new growth and young colours.

I can see bindweed starting to grow though. Will leave it, then isolate and spray this year.
