Well, I've peeked inside the dishwasher .... :dunno: ..... ... everything was as it should be :what:

Totally confused now: even ds heard the bang from his room and Mr Mum and I definately smelled a burnt plastic smell eminating from the machine after the bang. But, dishes are clean and sparkly, ladle is intact ... and Mr Mum gets to feed the dishwasher another day :heehee:

Ah, maybe!!!! There are no puddles on the floor and it can't be electrical because even a light bulb going is enough to set the trip switch here.

A few things to check -

In the sump (remove the flat mesh filter, then unscrew the microfilter), there is often a plastic guard cover that sits in front of the pump impeller - it will be removable (usually pulls upward), and if it has moved out of position the pump impeller can chew at and melt the plastic when it spins - if it is this, the cover might need replaced, particularly if its damaged as it will have burred edges.

Alternatively (and this is my main guess for a little used dishwasher) - I think the bang might have been the tablet door opening after a bit of a struggle with itself; open and close the detergent dispenser a few times ans make sure its not sticking or damaged.

Lastly, take a very close look at the racks inside the dishwasher, especially as its a Hotpoint, as they are guilty for developing small holes in the outer coating; this allows the hot water into the metal underneath, then the coating de-laminates and while the metal conducts the heat to the plastic underneath.

If all of the above are OK, then (sadly) it could be the motor in the sump - some Hotpoints have been known to have the motor let go and melt into part of the tub; the only way to know is to put it on again (I'd advise mostly empty) and see what it does; if it is a motor failure, it can be repaired, but if its melted the tub its probably not worthwhile.

You are more than welcome :)

I could be completely barking up the wrong trees, but they are the first things to check.

Incidentally, an easy test is to get a used jar of pasta sauce or similar (or a soup/bean tin) - let the inside dry and crud up a bit, remove all of the label and then whack it in the dishwasher on its own and set it off for a wash; open the dishwasher at the end of the cycle, immediately it finishes, and if you get your jar/tin back clean and warm then there is nothing major amiss :)

Well, I couldn't wait until the cold light of day :heehee:

Tested the tablet drawer ... works ok, but this may have been the issue, as Mr Mum even put the tablets in upside down

Racks are all in tip top condition. :dbgrtmb:

Having said that though, I located the sump-under-mesh and the microfilter was gunged up and :eeew: ( I told Mr Mum there was a bit of a whiff - and no, we don't have a dog to blame it on - and he merely took it personally  :th scifD36: ) and there is a definate brown stain on it (scorch mark, perhaps?). I've given it a good clean up and replaced it, securely. I'm going to give it a quick cycle and see what happens.

Once again, I cannot thank you enough for your kindness in sharing your knowledge/experience; which may have saved me a mini fortune! :dbgrtmb:

Mum, I'd suggest doing a few things

                        - firstly, soak the microfilter & mesh filter in while vinegar for a few hours and then rinse it thoroughly before putting it back into the machine
                        - before you do put it back in, empty the sump of all water (I use an old turkey baster), get your head in and have a good look into the sump and look at the impeller on the end of the pump - if its damaged, you might need a new pump; if all ok, reassemble your machine.
                        - next, put a bottle of Finish dishwasher cleaner into your machine and run on its hottest wash (empty apart from the cleaner)
                        - then, check the dishwasher drain hose where it connects to the drain and make sure that it is clear.

Hopefully, doing all of the above will ensure that anything that the internals are as clean as a whistle, and should hopefully prevent any future problems.

I'm glad to be able to help, albeit in a very small way - its nice to be able to give something back in return for all the support and help I've had on here :)

I'm only a PM away if needed.
