I dont think you can get it anymore freddy, it was far too effective:D slightly off thread, I came across this http://www.pan-uk.org/pestnews/Issue/pn33/pn33p3.htm Can you believe these people, they actually put the concentrated liquid into animals eyes to determine that it caused eye damage and therefore should be withdrawn. These people should be strung up, ofcourse it would cause eye damage, it should just say that on the bottle I 'm not sure where this world is heading, there are so many sickos about, bring on the meteorite in 2012 I say.
Pete, you are right about the reasons for withdrawl - cost of suporting chemicals for extra clasification rather than actual safety. Ironically the situation ther eu has created is one were there are only a few maufacturer suported chemicals therfore pesticide resistance will rapidly build up and we wont have the extra chemicals in the 'armoury' to tackle it. The both domestic and profeshional pestcontrol and horticulture sector has lost some damn good chemicals through typical eu stupidity.
I guess they are still available outside the EU, so they can be brought back into use when the resistance becomes too great. But you have got to wonder how something that is used in other parts of the world, much the same as we did a few years ago, gets banned in the UK.
Probably because our safety measures are more stringent Pete lots of stuff in the past did what it said on the tin but the consequences of using it are still evident today, take ddt for instance it was ahead of its field killing mosquitos and was used in vast quantities then it got in the food chain and now quite rightly has a worldwide ban. I am all for safety.
As far as I'm concerned, NO pestecide can be SAFE, if the word means what I think it means. We now have the rediculous situation where some can be used on edible crops and some cant. How do we guarantee that no one uses the non edible stuff on the edibles. Just like to say that as far as I'm concerned safety is a matter of common sence, as it used to be, nowdays it got out of hand and is putting this country at a dissadvantage to the rest of the world.
I as a normal gardener am careful in what I use in my garden and on my vegetables! The so called organic movement sell it followers short, they spend their time railing against anything that those so called "leaders" dislike. They are like ostrichs with their heads in the sand, and worry about what terrible things will happen if they should even think of using slug pellets or any insecticide. You only have to read some of the postings on here from "innocents" worrying about the "hell and damnation"which will befall them or their animals if they even speak the world "chemicals!"
Makka you consider yourself a "normal gardener" can you define normal? I like to grow organically I don't have a leader and certainly don't spend my time railing against anything,I prefer not to use slug pellets or insecticides thats my choice because I have a concern for wild life, and as for innocents worrying about "hell and damnation" give credit to people on this forum as having reasonable intelligence to be able to make their own minds when presented with the facts.
Hi Walnut! I have a large allotment and take lots of produce off it every year, more than I can use in my own family, so others benefit. I also grow lots of plants for the butterflies etc, and leave the sead heads fo the birds. Every year we have a turnover of new tenants, usually young men with families and women ( the innocents). When I greet and first meet them, for we are a friendly lot and like to make newcomers welcome, almost without exception their first words to me are---I'm going to be "TOTALLY ORGANIC" and I'm not going to use "SLUG PELLETS" for I don't want to feed my family chemicals. What gets up my nose is that I did not ask them how they were going to grow their stuff! When I ask how they are going to get rid of the forest of waist high weeds, they say they are not going to use weed killer or insecticide either. They all appear to be pre programmed to say the correct buzz words because they all sprout the same nonsence. And like you they are aggressive about their views, when you point out the problems of getting the plot under control. They then arrive with some pallets, pieces of carpet, polythene sheet ,bits of wood, plastic cups and other rubbish. Anyway they come and muck about for a few visits trying to get rid of the weeds and other rubbish left by the previous "Organic gardener", they get disheartened and leave, never to be seen again. This happens time and again, year after year, I feel sorry for them, they only get their info from Gardeners World, whose closed minds never mention the hard work it is at first to get the soil under control, and also to keep under control. Luckily last year 3 normal gardeners arrived, cleared their plots, and had the loan of rotavators from us,and were able to get some crops of veggies last year. They are still here this year, and things are looking up. I want all new comers to succeed,as it means less weed seeds blowing onto my plot. We have 36 separate plots, and not one of them is tended by "AN ORGANIC GARDENER" which should tell you something, as every year for as long as I can remember, they arrive spouting their dogma and leave never to be seen again.
I know where your coming from Makka, I've seen the same "gardeners"myself. Its true, they dont usually last long. I dont think that type would last long inorganically either, I think they watch it on TV and dont realise there is some hard work involved. I think there are others among the organic brigade who know the score and are prepared to work at it. These are the ones that "they" are trying to emulate. But if you dont have the determination, you wont sucseed either way.
Hi. For my part, I think that one has to try and strike a happy medium. As long as organic methods work, then I`ll go with it, but if they are too much like hard work or not effective, then, it`s out with the chemicals ! ( I mean that in a light-hearted way, but the point is made). I don`t want to be adding stuff to my veg that might be harmful either, but if it`s the slugs vs the crops, it`s out with the pellets ! :D Cheers...freddy.
Think you have it the nail on the head there pete I would like to think i'm one of them. My wifes uncle had a beautiful garden imaculate lawn spent nearly all his time in it, one of the old gardener types always admired him until I found out one of his tricks was to water his lawn with some stuff to kill all the worms so he didn't end up with worm casts on his grass he had a shed full of chemicals something for every occasion most of them banned now, thats what I call the easy option, but everybody to their own.
