    I agree on that, they are going to be at least 18" long.

    I have no clue about bananas, but I am not sure that you should really split any herbaceous perennial when its dormant. I have a book on propagation and it talks about what season to split different plants. It mentions many plants that can be split in winter, but goes on to say the plants mentioned are so tough that they tend to survive inspite of being split in winter - not because of it.

    The arguement he puts forward is that when you split a plant you damage parts of it, and viruses etc can enter the plant via the damage. So the plant needs to be growing so as to repair the damage as quickly as possible. This does make some sense.
