    Hi Lollipop,

I seem to remember, from the days when I sold records, that the song is well over 200 years old and based on an even older story. Of course, it should sound well suited for a female to sing as the story is from the female point of view :) :flag:.

I remember selling the record by Ewan MacColl when it first came out in the mid 1950's. I think that was the first 'modern' :hehe: recording of the song.
I have just checked my record by Joan Baez and it was recorded in 1961.
For those of you old enough to remember :old:
Ewan MacColl married Peggy Seeger (also a folk singer) who was a sister of the great Pete Seeger. Pete is considered to be the grandfather of American folk and was one of the first well known activist for civil rights and to preserve the environment. At the age of 90 he is still performing and was on BBC TV a few months ago.

Ewan MacColl wrote the song "The First Time Ever I Saw Her Face" for his wife Peggy and here's a version by Roberta Flack.

Roberta Flack had a massive hit (and won a Grammy) with "Killing Me Softly With His Song" which was written about the singer/songwriter Don McClean.

Don McClean had a massive hit with "American Pie" which was written about the death of Buddy Holly - and another massive hit with the song "Vincent" that he wrote about Vincent Van Gogh.

Sorry about the history lesson :flag: :hehe:

    Thanks for that, Doghouse :gnthb:.

Ray Charles sang that brilliantly and I still remember that we couldn't get enough copies of it for sale - 1962 I think. It was so much better than the way Eddy Arnold, who wrote it, sang it.

That's neat Gogs ... we have recording musical neighbours here with a sound room in the orchards ... quite weird .... fortunately it's music we like!

We've been driving around a lot these past few days and here's a Southern American group they are playing a lot on the Portuguese station I listen to (can't abide the English stations) ...

I was looking through my old LP collection today and I played this track (the first on this clip) as I remembered I liked it. Not played it for about twenty years.
Not his usual stuff, shame he died a few years ago, but he'd been ill for some time. There was a TV documentary about him a few years ago, hurt his leg badly in a car accident coming home from the pub. He hit a cow!

I heard this on Sounds of the 60s this morning, and it knocked me out. I'd never heard it before although I'm a big fan of 60s soul music and thought I'd heard most of the classics. Apparently it was never a hit and I can't understand why - it's brilliant!
