Theres some terrific music out there that never seems to get anything like the same amount of coverage that mass-produced, assembly line pap like x-factor contestants seems to get. Time to put the alternatives forward :

Question, on the last track I put up ... Heroes and Saints by Nicolaj Grandjean (Portuguese) ... does everyone see it like me singing in English with Portuguese subtitles ?????

    Roxy Music

I was born in the late 40s and like all sorts but particularly country, folk and indy/alternative rock. Gave up on classical in my late teens. :hehe:

I have just finished a stint as an Examinations Attendant at the Faculty of Music. It has it's advantages, although I was not in the Concert Hall I was able to listen to the candidates on a speaker system. I was listening to a young lady pianist who I have heard before, she was a very good performer and I think will be a future star. Her name, Kate Whitley, not only can she play very well but has the looks to be popular as well. She resembles Fiona Bruce in looks.

They were featured in an episode of "Dirty Sexy Money" the other night and I liked it in a "Dawson's Creek sort of way."

Although this is slightly off topic I thought it was so good that it warranted being on here. :gnthb:

I've also put it on a separate thread. :)

The Beatles might have pinched the title, but couldn't write a song as good as the original.

On another board we've discussing what was the best tune that reflected the mood of summer.

    This has always been mine.

Thanks Doghouse, that's a lovely version of it and certainly is reminiscent of lazy and relaxing summers. :gnthb:

There were so many good pieces of music and song in Porgy and Bess - a brilliant work.

Even through the sadness and pathos of the story the songs still manage to give the impression of hope and love throughout the opera.

Of course, Ella was a master of this form of expression and she could sing the song in so many different ways.

Here is a version she did with Satchmo

and one just on her own.

Thanks for that I've got several recordings of the song.

I think what makes the Miles Davis recording is the orchestral arrangements by Gil Evans. I've had that album since my late teens and never tire of that tune.

But I've always preferred; "Miss Perfect Pitch" Sarah Vaughan to Ella, great voice and an accomplished jazz pianist.
