    Thanks Doghouse,
I also think that Sarah Vaughan is great but have never been keen on that version by her. :flag:

What I think is excellent are these she sang in a live performance.

I've a "Double A side" of hers in one of my jukeboxes.
"Brokenhearted Melody" and the duet with Billy Eckstine, "Passing Strangers."

I've also got this too, but the original recording.

Don't worry about it, Shiney. Many of us think that Nana Mouskouri is a dwarf form of the grape hyacinth. :hehe:

There was a sad case a few years back when a couple asked for the theme to Robin Hood to be played at their wedding. They meant that saccharine thingy from Bryan Adams - 'Everything I do' etc. Imagine the bride's surprise when she found herself galloping down the aisle to the rousing strains of: 'Robin Hood, Robin Hood, riding through the glen ...'

One of the reasons that music from the past is still popular, is because it's possible for us to sing along to the classic "standards."

The reason for this is because the songwriters wrote songs which spanned no more than an octave and a half, often much less, this is within the vocal range of most people, including the popular crooners of the day.
This range was chosen as the "music business" was principally about selling sheet music. Before the war, a high proportion of homes particularly in the USA, had a piano and there was usually someone who could play it in the house. Singing along to the piano was a popular pastime, before everyone had a radio and later a record player. It would have been no good if the vocal range of the song was beyond that the average person.
It is said that many songs written for Ethel Merman were scored around "her best three notes."

I first heard this fifty years ago when I bought the LP, I never tire of listening to it. Had to buy the CD 'cos I wore out the record.
