This was played during the film "The American President" last night. I've seen the film before but I do like this tune. They don't write 'em like that any more.

I've finally got round to watching "Beyond the Sea" the film starring Kevin Spacey of the life of the singer Bobby Darin.

This song is included in the film, not by him. This is a live recording of his which someone has posted on YouTube with a collection of photos of Darin and his wife Sanda Dee.

I've always liked the tune, written by Lee Adams & Charles Strouse, from the musical "All-American."

Here's an orchestral arrangement if you don't like Bobby Darin.

Doghouse, I haven't seen 'Beyond The Sea' so don't know how they portrayed Bobby Darin in it. I always thought he was excellent at putting feeling and meaning into his songs.

I was fortunate to meet him in 1966 and he was a warm and friendly person. When I was working on the ships one of my customers was building a hotel in Portugal - Hotel Do Mar in Sesimbra. He said that, when I got married, I should come to his hotel for the honeymoon - which Mrs shiney and I did.

As he had just recently opened it he had invited many celebrities to stay there and Bobby Darin was one of them. He mixed with the other guests as just a normal person and seemed to enjoy not being in the limelight.

For its day the hotel was built in traditional style with an ultra-modern twist and we thought it was fantastic but I don't know how it would stand up to hotels of today.

Booby had quite a range of styles of song but was best known for pop songs like 'Splish Splash' and 'Dream Lover'; and other songs that had a strong beat like 'Mack The Knife' and 'Clementine'. He went through a ballad and protest song period and I liked the way he sang this rather gloomy anti-war song about nuclear fallout :flag:- written by Tom Paxton.

    Hi Shiney,

    Thanks for that.
The film I thought was quite good, not too sensational. It dealt with the less glamorous side of his life reasonably well.

Although he and Sandra Dee divorced, I looked her up on Wiki, she never married again and was troubled with alcoholism for the rest of her life, dying in 2005. According to their son Dodd, in his book "Dream Lovers" she was born in 1944 but her parents lied about her age to get her work in films. That would have made her 16 when she married Darin.
The film is worth seeing if it comes on again.

Among the many different styles of music in my jukeboxes, I have got Darin's "Beyond the Sea" and "Dream Lover."

    Thanks, Doghouse. :thumb:

I've got both of those in my 'collection' but I don't look after my records as well as you do so I don't know whether they are still playable. :(

Actually before I got into jukeboxes I'd thrown away all my "singles."

I'm very particular about the quality of those I've since collected, some are "mint" re-issues, mostly from eBay and some from friends, most from my golf club. A lot of the latter had been stuck up in their lofts for decades and frankly had been "played to death."
Although with some of the rarer ones you haven't a great deal of choice.
If I'm disappointed with any I keep a look out for a better quality one.

You can strike lucky though, there are are lot of singles still around that people bought on impulse many years ago and only played a few times.

my roots lie definintely in rock. As a child of the 70's I grew up listening to Deep purple and Rush coming at full volumn from ny big brothers bedroom!
I'm currently loving Kasabian and Mumford and sons, aswell as a bit of Florence and the machine. Old favorites for me are Green day, Red hot chilli peppers, Manic street preachers,, Offspring, etc etc...you get the picture and my all time favorite....Aerosmith xxx
