I was thinking of putting step overs around some of the perimeter now. Wonder if my neighbour would object? Although the distances on the photo you posted seem to have quite wide spaces to me.

I would ask but I never seem to see him, but I know he is working his plot.

Haven't updated this thread for a while. So here are a few more pictures I have of work I've done today.

Have been busy the past week installing the joists to replace the pallet decking that was previously here. The joists are old fence posts ripped out by the local nature park I volunteer at so got them for all for free. The decking itself is scaffold boards removed from another plot that wanted them cleared so again got these for nothing too. Although there seems to be a shortage round here of scaffold boards as no one can get hold of them.

Mr Jane came along today and helped me install the gutter and join up the two water butts i got for £5 each. (Thank you for the heads up @Kristen)

Hopefully the rains will come and fill them up soon.

Looking so professional and thoughtfully laid out now Jane. We had an hour's worth of good steady stuff yesterday and the water butt is nicely full now, yours won't take long to fill,

Did you close the gaps between the joists as rats just love making their homes under allotment sheds and dragging all sorts of food and nesting stuff under them unless it's blocked off. I use a strip of metal mesh stapled to the ends of the joists together with a row of buried reclaimed bricks underneath it.

Not yet. But I will do once all the boards are down.

They're stunning but I imagine have been there many, many years. If you go to Chenonceau, go to Cheaumont too - they always have an interesting garden festival for the whole summer.

Haven't updated this thread for a while as I had a bit of a dispute with my allotment neighbour which has hopefully gone away now.

Have been busy planting my fruit plants I have been collection throughout the year, mainly blackcurrants and strawberry plants (do I cut back blackcurrant bushes yet?) Here's my strawberry bed. A bit sparse at the moment but I have a lot of other strawberry plants on the plot to move over so shouldn't be bare for long.

Also Monday I pulled back a large section of the membrane to reveal lots of bindweed. Shall be making a new bed hopefully at the weekend and then giving this part a good digging over and hopefully be able to plant some potatoes by next spring.

Forgot to add a photo of the finished "deck" (although I still need to block the front off when I can find a piece of wood long enough.

How long after does Roundup render the ground unusable for veggie growing?

Well according to the bottle it says that it won't effect the soil.

                    :dunno:

Haven't updated this thread for a while. So here is a bit of progress I've made during the past month.

First of all I finally made my large bed out of the scaffold boards I have left. It ain't great though but it will do.

                      IMG_20141125_122118854[1].jpg

Secondary I turned my compost bin over, its amazing how all those weeds I stuck in just a few months ago have now reduced in size. I now have one bin completely empty now.

The long process begins of digging over the massive bed I just made. The clay ain't that bad, but considering its at the top of the hill the drainage is awful. Any suggestions on how to help with the claggy soil? I was going to grow potatoes here which I have been told will help break up the soil but is there anything else I van do in the meantime?
