Freddy, some small solids will enter the filter but most will need to be syphoned out when you do water changes. No, the filter will not make the water acidic, it is turning ammonia into nitrite and nitrite into nitrate!! i.e. the "the nitrogen cycle" :)

    Hi Freddy,

Ask as many questions as you like, if I can help I will.
The HMA filter removes heavy metals and chlorine from my water thst im going to use for my water change.
As Val as said you need small solids entering your filter

    Hello folks.

I'm familiar with the Nitrogen Cycle, as I am a Koi keeper. In the Koi keeping world, it is desirable to keep solids down to a minimum when it comes to the biological stage of the filter. Which filter did you opt for Ian? I assume it has an in-built pump?
As I understand it, Discus like the water to be on the Acidic side of neutral, and as I wasn't familiar with your HMA unit, I wondered if this was how this issue could be tackled. So, how have you overcome this? Or, is your tap water ok?

    Cheers...Freddy

My external filter is my biological filter.
Discus do like soft acidic water, im lucky as my tap water is soft, to turn the water acidic, you can use bogwood thats what I do, are you can use blackwater extract,
If live in a hard water area you would have to use a RO unit.
I also have a koi pond as well
