Wiseoldowl's fantastic lilies prompted me to post this photo I took this morning.
We bought several lily bulbs described as "Gulliver" in January, (I planted them in the snow!) which will we were told eventually grow to about five to six feet each year.
Some are over four feet tall already and this is the first to bloom.
Some like this have several blooms on the stem, one or two only one.

    Edit.
This particular lily has six blooms, yet one of a similar size and possibly similar colour but not yet out has only one.

I love lilies.... one of my all time favourite plants.. I only really started gardening this year and everything I grow is in containers... I wish I had a proper garden but I'll have to make the best of what I have... the first plant I bought was the Lily this one... its called "Orange Joy" and is about 2.5ft tall it stands proudly besides my front door :) however its finished flowering for now so I'm just feeding it until the foliage goes yellow and dries up! :(

Been to B&Q today aswell though and got 2 more smaller Lilies half price... I like half price :D lol Vesuvius and Lemon Joy with a few flowers and lots of un opened buds on.. bargain!! Got a new bulb half price cuz its out of season called Strawberry and Cream which is supposed to flower a dark mulberry pink with white edges... think I should put it in soil or something so it doesn't dry out... soon I don't think I will be able to move for lilies outside my front door! :D :D :D

      Lovely photos everyone:gnthb:

I managed to get some photos of ours the other week before we went away and luckily there were still some in bloom when we got back home.

I have even managed to get some scales grown like they showed to do on Gardeners World the other month so have them growing on so look forward to having even more bulbs to plant out in a few years time when they are large enough:)

The third variety of my "Gulliver" lilies has flowered, there's just a couple of these. Not very tall, only about a couple of feet, but we're assured they will be taller next year. Our "total haul" was 11 plants from fifteen bulbs, so not bad.

What gorgeous lillies! They're beautiful. My Mother in Law brought me a couple of the Vesuvius variety (which had been reduced, got to love a bargain) this weekend. They've past their flowering stage for this year apparently, so I've removed them from their containers and have planted them in a larger pot, and will plant them out next year. I'm in a quandary though, am I correct in thinking that Lillies are poisonous to cats? I have six of the beasts, and would be mortified if I were to plant these gorgeous plants out, only to make one of the cats ill.
I guess I should Google really, but you can get so much conflicting advice on there at times; so I thought I'd much rather rely in the wisdom of people here. Hope you don't mind me asking, but would really appreciate any info you might be able to give me.

This played on my mind so much last night, that I have 'Googled' this morning, and yes, Asiatic lillies are poisonous to felines. :( What a shame, they're such beautiful flowers, but alas they've got to go. I've already got one risky element in the garden (Day Lilly) and have not had any issues with the cats with that one; but I don't want to tempt fate with the Asiatic variety, as I understand them to be of greater risk to kitties.
So, I shall just have to enjoy their blooms round at my mother in laws!

Cats are generally pretty good at avoiding eating what harms them.

I've got lilies and cats and never had any problems.

You can imagine how many 'friends' would plant lilies if it meant they didn't get cats in their garden!!!!!
