    Coub & Chengjing,
Thanx guys for the positive comments and yes it is hard work but if it was simple and easy we would get bored stiff and not bother with it. I think that it's the challenge that makes the whole thing worthwhile. You get this oportunity to put your own stamp on the garden or plot and then you stand back and either admire your efforts or change everything 'cos you made a do-do of it all. Thankfully I, or We sat down and put it all on paper first. I also have a friend who is a garden designer and she gave her input and we worked around her suggestions. Some of her ideas would have been almost imposible and would have cost the earth to put into action. She reckoned if I had got a firm in to do the work it would have cost in the region of (wait for it) 85-100 GRAND. Hey who does she think I am? Rockafella or what????? G.man

    Well Everybody,
Spent yesterday painting the pergola over the decking and then putting up our whirly clothes line. I had not been able to dig out the anchor tube when I moved house, so I improvised with a short length of plastic waste pipe which was just the right diam. I lifted a slab at the area beside my gable border and dug out a sizable hole then concreted it in. To stop it being hauled out when removing the whirly I bored a hole through the pipe and inserted a 6" galvanised spiral nail into it. That will anchor it forever.
Today we visited Gardening Scotland at Edinburgh and had a great day out with a couple of friends. We bought some plants ( a nice black poppy, an astrantia major, a heuchera and a cream foxglove.) I also bought a new border hand fork for £2, not stainless steel, but very robust with quite a longish handle.
My mate Ronnie bought an extendable hanging basket watering wand with adjustable spray for £5 which looked every bit as good as if not better than the hoelock version.

A great meal at home when we returned and a great finish to a good day even though by lunch time the heavens opened and soaked everyone.

Thanks O2, I really enjoyed doing the deck and the Boss Woman has done some planting up too. As I said, once it's tidied and ship shape, I'll post more pics of the plants and border.

Looking good ginger. That pasloade 350 must have saved some time, a nice bit of kit for doing decks.

Changed the back garden quite drastically. At the end of August, the potatoes were lifted and cleaned ready for storing. I had Ayrshires in June and Pentland Javelin for a main crop.
Decided to build a structure at the bottom going to the compost bins and then decided to plant a few climbers against the fence running down to the composting area. Some more shrubs were given to me and the fruit trees were not doing too well in tubs, so, I decided to use the veg plots to plant up some raspberries and the fruit trees and new shrubs.
Later, we decided to have a few chickens and I started preparing the area, where the remaining 2 tons of manure was stored, ready for the chickens. It was hard work moving and spreading the manure especially taking it up the steps to the top terraces. I was knackered at the end of the day and a hot bath was called for, not just because of the aching muscles, but the smell was awfull. Next day I had a pair of metal gates ,that I had purloined from Jewsons when they moved base, and used those for a fence. An arch with integral gate was purchased from one of the local garden centres ,at 10% discount, and fitted as access to the (orchard) :D . I built another short fence with a wooden gate at the steps down from the summer house area and started looking for a hen house.
Dobbies came up trumps in that respect cos they had £50 off of a hen house that could accomodate 4 hens. I bought that and built it up about 4 weeks ago. The search was on for hens! 4pullets almost at the laying stage were bought at a breeders 10 miles away and move in quite successfully.
We get one egg a day 6 days a week at the moment, but the rest will start layin soon.
I am off work today cos its new years eve, so I will take some pics and post them later on today.

Hi Paladin, I will go forth later today and take some more pics. I am going to use a flapper attachment on my trusty cordless and repaint the fence and gate black and gold on the tops
