I've tried avocado from a pip ... it died at five years but I do know they grow here because there is a tree less than 1km from me at a restaurant that is heaving with fruit.

Pineapple ... I am REALLY surprised if you saw that growing here! :hate-shocked:

No, not really interested it the Coco, bought them for fun at about €13 each but I'm too old to do them from seed ... maybe could plant it on my grave if it grew into anything substantial ... :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

I'll let you know if my Goji berries take though. :)

Victoria , the first plant I`ve ever grown from pips was the goji berry 5 years ago , along with the kiwi , the kiwi will not produce fruit but it`s a nice plant , the goji is the second year that produce flowers and not berrys....on the list of plant to destroy.

You may have a go with the coconut and in 7 year will think about us ;)

No need to be sorry Strongy :) , this was just a bit of fun for me, something of a challenge, something else to germinate from a supermarket, I don't seriously expect to be self sufficient with coconuts in a few years :heehee:.....I'll just how long I can keep them going :dbgrtmb:

Sal, the Goji produces fruit in the 2nd/3rd year here ... I know from my friend.

What ... will I be pushing up coconuts instead of daisies? ... :loll:

Aaaah what a beautiful place Victoria, mine was the purple/pink :cry3: almost flourescent colour, I got it from a lady on a swapshop, along with this lovely lampranthus, tiny flowers on this, unfortunately another casualty of the hard winter, I might see if she wants to do a bit more swapping :)

Bilbo, I am also not sure whether salt air/ozone has anything to do with their growth as they only grow by the sea.

Am I right in thinking the sea is the main way the coconut disperses its seed?

High temperatures along with high humidity and 8 to 10 hours of sunlight, and you have it cracked.
I cant say I remember seeing coconut palms even at Kew, although I could be mistaken.
Simbad, I might be wrong but that looks very much like Delosperma cooperii to me.:)

Pete I think you're right!!!!! I just googled Delosperma and the leaf looks much more like it than lampranthus, I never questioned it at the time as the flower looks so like lampranthus, thanks for that :) ,it was a lovely little plant.

Now I'm confused too Victoria  as just looked at your picture link and the leaf looks very like your Drosanthemum too!!!!! :)
I went back to the swapshop to see if the full name was on my swap list but it was such a long time ago its no longer on there, do remeber the lady saying it was one of her 'special' and rarer plants :dunno:

Wow, Simbad, you really are confused ... just go into Edit on all but one of them and delete the post.

Yes, maybe yours is the Dew Flower ... it has very tiny flowers as opposed to Lampranthus. Mine isn't in bloom at the moment or I would go photograph it.

Update.....alas the shoot on the second of the coconuts to germinate quickly turned to mush, but on the positve side the other one is coming on a treat, still quite a small shoot at about 1/2 inch but its starting to develope a point that looks like it'll be the growing shoot and a bump that will eventually be the root :)
