Well I've just been on Van Meuwen and had a look at raspberry shrubs ;) *cough* @Sheal :heehee:

Bought 3 raspberry plants and 1 blackberry plant. They will form the shrub hedge. I'll put the blackberry shrub on the end, near the coldframe. I was also caught looking at rhubarb and my better half has stressed that rhubarb crumble is the bees knees so I've bought 4 of them. :dbgrtmb: A variety that spreads 4ft across. I'll have these in the middle of each edge of that square and grow something in the middle.

Also got some freebies so I'll be planting those as well. One of the freebies is a funny looking multicolour daffodil (MORE DAFFODILSSSSSS!). Also got my mint seeds, tropaecolum speciosum and nasturtium "nanum empress of india" seeds through the post too which is nice!

@Anthony Rogers I'm thinking about taking out some (most) of the plants from the raised bed because they have all bulked up a bit. Most are 3-4 times bigger than when you sent them. I'll need to plant my onions and garlic when they arrive to get things to get them growing ready for winter.

I say both so where does that put me.

We're only winding you up and you're bound to retaliate at some point. :)

Yes, you can just recycle them in the composter until they break down but don't put to many in at once you need a good mix to keep it breaking things down.

I don't think it makes a lot of difference, but having a lid on the composter helps the heat to build up and that certainly helps.

Okey Dokey you two let's sort out the bush/shrub question shall we :)

It's all down to the stems coming from underground.........

A bush has one main stem coming from beneath ground level....

        WP_20150821_001.jpg

A shrub is multi - stemmed from beneath ground level.....

        WP_20150821_002.jpg

So, as you can see it all comes down to training, pruning etc.

I'm going to transplant my plants into their permanent positions in about a months time, but, as long as you take note of shade/sun positioning, spacing etc you should be ok.

I'm not sure where that puts you :snork: And yes I dish it out a bit too :blue thumb:

That's got me thinking now  I've got a frame made up of slats of wood which is nice because the air can get in but it's wide so I was hoping the centre would heat up. I don't really want to dig out the cuttings but it's sounding like the best option. The problem is that there's a lot of nettles in the composter and digging it all out could be painful :frown: I'll leave it for now and just keep adding more stuff to it and mixing it all in. Hopefully it will dilute the mixture.

Ohhhhh another lesson learnt :dbgrtmb: So these will be raspberry shrubs, but my Thuja is actually a bush.

So why is the definition of a bush described as a shrub then @Anthony Rogers ? :)

I know very little about growing fruit but aren't raspberries referred to as canes?

                        @Apple Blossom Cheers :blue thumb:

Just the rest of the rocks to put down, fluff up all the soil, make a wire frame/fence for the raspberry bushes... shrubs... no, canes! And then make a cloche frame for the raised bed. Then it's steady sailing until other things start arriving.

Best get my joinery head on!
