Hi all - thanks for the replies

has been counter / Pro Gard - I don't think it's thatch, last Aug / Sep the whole lawn was scarified within an inch of it's life and there doesn't seem to be much rubbish on the surface other than dead yellow grass. When I run a rake through the lawn a lot does come up - the thing that troubles me is what is killing it in the first place?

Am I just cutting it too short and I need to live with a grass height of 40mm - 50 mm ?

CAn I ask an obvious question? You aren't cutting it whilst the sun is on it are you?

I find that it takes more than one scarify and season to get rid of thatch.

The grass is not dead just needs bet access at its base to light, air and food

Hi - I may have some answers ....

One of my friends came over to my house to give me some advice, he used to work on Golf course, so he knows his grass although he's a bit rusty.

There seems to be some red thread in the lawn or rather red thread has already been there and is fading out. He doesn't think this is the cause for all of the yellow patches because it rarely kills the ryegrass.

The lawn was reseeded after a heavy scarify last September and the cold Winter may have badly hit back some of the weaker ryegrasses in the mix.

His recommendation is to keep mowing at the same height but only once per week and to keep lighly raking the lawn to keep the surface clean and to let natiure sort itself out.

    Nick

Looks to me as it just needs a short cut and GOOD scarification by machine. Mine looked exactly like that.
