Just watched a program we only have 10 per cent of roses grown in 1900 left. Anyone trying to revive the really old roses ?

10% is not a lot and 1900 isn't that far back, I suppose we've got the modern breeders to blame for their demise?

It's the customer demand. That's why their saying buy old roses and introduce them back into uk gardens I think

Good afternoon just a bit of trivia:smile:

1.Roses you find for sale in a florist etc... have been cultivated to last longer in a vase, rule of thumb is the stronger the smell the lesser the vase life. They are bred just to last longer cut which knocks out the scent, the only roses on the market that do have a higher fragrance are English roses but the vase life once again is shorter.

2.It's a myth that modern roses don't smell like old fashioned roses. This has been increased by the advent of florists roses which are different varieties to our garden roses and have been bred to have a long vase life and long straight stems – but no scent! In the 1970s, rose breeders bred roses for their colour, size and disease-resistance. Scent was considered less important, leading to the introduction of many new varieties with no smell. This attitude has changed in the past twenty years and much more emphasis is now placed on scent. On a final note, 200 years ago people were saying modern roses don't smell like old fashioned ones.

It's a shame, once again it's supply and demand. With most gardeners the first two things that attract them to a rose is the flower and then the scent. That to most are what roses are all about!

It's all about fashion being like a wheel, it keeps turning until it come to a point where an old idea/preference suddenly becomes the new.:dunno: Like all the Retailers world the very professional marketing in the Gardening World is targeted towards getting the customers to spend and also keep them interested in new things. Let's face it, a lot of TV gardening personalities have been "bought" by the Marketing Companies to persuade the public that this or that is a good thing and spread the word about the new "in" thing. I think at the beginning the Rose Growers did start off with the intention of improving the disease resistance of roses, etc, but once the Marketing regime took over things got a bit blurred and more gimmicks were presented. You only have to look at the names some of the roses have been given to see that clever marketing is present because they are designed to mark an occasion, the name of a loved one, either present or departed, a liked personality etc.
Me???, I buy a rose, or any plant for that matter, because I like it, because it has struck a chord within me that says "that's for my garden". Modern or old, disease resistance or no, marketing blurb and hype.......it matters not a jot............but getting that feeling that says "Yes!" is what matters to me and I'll suffer the "faults" of the plant because that's what gardening is about.:dunno::hapydancsmil::heehee:
