Getting the key today so I am officially the new plot holder!! Am going to set my compost bin up and get the weeds pulled. Have managed to twist hubbys arm to at least help me set up the bin so he will be goin to have a look round this afternoon. The weather is meant to be pants for the rest of the week so may not be able to do much for a few days. I will go get my garlic and onion sets so I have them ready for planting. I'm quite excited now!!

Made a bit of a start. Hubby came to help put the compost bin together and got some of the weeds up. Spent a while talking to the secretary and had a walk round the place. The rain has started now so lord knows when it will be nice enough to go finish off the front bit. IMAG0505.jpg

Spent the afternoon clearing the rest of the front bit. Walked around and stared loads too, LOL!! Trying to imagine how it's going to look and where stuff is going to go. Raised beds? Where do I want paths? I need another compost bin already........

I'm a fan of raised beds, catz. Mr Mum even managed to cobble some together from cheap decking boards (which is pretty ambitious ... for him :heehee: ). My reasoning being: as a noob I want to plant what I fancy - and still be able to recognise it; I like to segment things; I find it easier to tackle; I like that I can add some hoops (at some point) to provide warmth/netting when needed; I can "rotate" my raised beds to maximise their potential.

I get the feeling you are more knowledgable than I am anyway, but just sharing my own reasons ;) Oh, plus, I don't have an allotment, just a large area I could designate to growing something for either us, or the chooks (depending on results :heehee: )

I can't bash a nail in straight, LOL! I do quite like how the raised beds make things look tidy. Plus it would give defined paths to walk on. I may try and get some timber and slabs from freegle. And another compost bin. I've not really grown veg since I've been over here. Back In Idaho I had a nice patch where I grew toms, cucumbers, sweet peppers, and jalepenos. My Mom used to come and get the toms and can loads. She did plain, stewed, and juice and we had plenty to last the winter. My attempts at those sorts of veg have been pretty pathetic over here really. So I'm going to try stuff I don't have much experience with. It's all about learning and trying new things to keep it interesting.

Catz, I think you will do just fine! Take your mother's wisdom, the English climate, a dash of inspiration mixed with a dollop of hope and ... I'm sure you will make great inroads into your projects ;)

Oh there will be success and failure too. But it will be fun and interesting either way. Have you got pics of what you have done?

Ok, just done a speedy search and the only photo I can find is from Feb this year (but, it has changed since then because we have gone from 6 to 3 by doubling them up to make them higher, thus, more managable 26 Feb 12 013 (800x533).jpg

Nice one. I do like those. I think they are a good size too. Not too far across so you can reach the middle easily. Thanks for posting that.
