Looks like some sort of rot.
Can't see a rodent gnawing at healthy wood.

I realise you are emotionally attached. But I would dig it out, and burn the wood. And not plant another one in that area for some time.

I used to try and rescue all sorts of scraps of plant, but no longer.
        Life is too short.
If something I grow isn't at it's peak, I ditch it and try again, or give something else a go.

I'll get out there tomorrow and take some more close ups, now that I've finished clearing all the debris and grasses away.

Was planning on redoing that area and getting rid of the conifer and hebe so will just see how it goes. Hopefully as pete says, one of them might be ok?!

Probably open to being put down on this idea but if it was mine and bearing in mind there might be one living stem in there I think I'd have a go at watering and washing the dead areas with dilute Jayes Fluid.
Maybe a couple of teaspoons in a gallon of water, water the root area and scrub the stems with it.
I wont hurt but it might kill off the rot.
If not you have nothing to lose.
Maybe a second application in a month or so if the plant appears to be alive.

I'm going to actually have to google dry rot as i dont really know what it is. (Unless its that root rot i mentioned?!?)

Like you say @pete got notting to lose so may aswell give it a go.

This sounds weird but i do have some anti bac anti fungal anti everything hibiscrub....I'm wondering whether to try that. I do have jeyes fluid too.

Well the wisteria is still alive....waiting for the flowers to open. Unfrotunately my other two got hit by that late frost so has killed some of the flowers. Would have been gorgeous!
