I don't envy you that job!

I've just noticed the level of your roof. I didn't realise your ground dropped away side to side as well as back to front, a double challenge for you! You've achieved a lot this year and no doubt plans will be underway over the winter months for next year. :)

The only think happening this winter is that conifer is coming down!
I get home from work at 6 so it's not long now until I can't do anything out there after work :).
So it's just preparing everything ready to be basically left for half a year, bar the odd weekend.
I'm not working by candle light on those steps! Haha.
I think I'm going to ask a friend to do me a massive favour behind that garage! Not my cup of tea working behind there. I did two bags last night and hated it.
Although what is down there is the most amazing compost I've found in the entire garden!

I'm not a lover of conifers either so I'd probably get rid of it too. :)

The compost that's behind the garage, is it stuff that's been put there or is it trimmings from the hedge that's above it?

Trimmings from the hedge, about 40 years worth! It's above knee height and I'm just over 6 foot. It's the softest darkest heaviest compost I've ever seen...
Ofc it's dark down there and there's no weeds or anything that have been able to grow!
        Just well rotted growing magic!

Ooooo your plants are going to love that! :)

What are you going to do at the side of the garage once you've cleared it?

I can't use it for anything really, I'm going to "lay" the edging strips I've put as a temporary path to the greenhouse as a base and probably concrete the lot down.
(That means the wall and the garage foundations are tied together as one)
That and it gives me chance to run a dpm for the garage as this is the side I get the worst water ingress from, it could be classed as a small stream in winter.
Also if it's concrete I can rake up any cuttings so it doesn't end up like this again!
I may pay someone to clear that... It's horrible between to two walls and under the garage roof end! So claustrophobic!

            This is the garden.
            IMAG0835.jpg
So i've named all the sections
Starting on the left at the greenhouse and going clockwise.

Greenhouse, up a bit, Bed ONE, Wall ONE, Bed TWO, Patio TWO, Wall top 3,
Starting again with Wall top 4, (back of shot in front of the fence on concrete) now working down.
Bed THREE (biggest bed, about the size of the artificial grass) behind the picket fence.
Wall TWO (with the white roses on) Bed FOUR, Is the bed the roses are in.
Bed FIVE is the final one which is the bed in front of the little concrete wall in front of the artificial grass.
            IMAG0917.jpg

That's the little KEY in the top right of this picture.
GH one wall one two patio two w-3 w-4 three w-two four artificial FIVE and patio, (going clockwise starting from the greenhouse again.

Wall 3 and 4 are both "on top of the wall" locations, where i'm planning on making planters for something.

All on Clay-y soil, i'm going to get some better soil up on the biggest layer (three)

Full sun is: Greenhouse, TWO, Three (2/3rds of it) and FIVE
Part sun: ONE, FOUR, and the right hand 1/3rd of THREE. And Wall 3, Wall 4
Shaded wall: (Wall 1, Wall 2)

I also have P1 on there, but i've already planted that planter up with what i want.

              It's looking good!

You've obviously got the gist of that better than me. :) I think I'd be inclined to name each area and have a small wall plaque attached to each one. Or a plaque with a different flower on it for each area.

                IMAG1159.jpg

Well... I can upload certain images... new year's with the fire pit! It was toasty for all :) almost changed into my T-shirt at midnight. Really impressed. I have other photos... but it won't let me upload them (too big) :( I'll try another way later as I can't upload them while at work any more :(

Good to see you back Neil. It looks like all your hard work up there has paid off. :) You can reduce the size of your pictures on your computer if you have one.

Have you got any plans for the garden for this coming year?

I'll just update this straight from the camera I think. Only problem is, it needs to be daylight to take the photos! It's nearly that time of year that I can actually do stuff after work in daylight... although the weather is against me :( brrrr solid frozen clay, it's like concrete

Up until now I've always gardened on clay but currently have sandy soil, I really don't know which is worse to work with. Sandy soil is easy to dig over but keeping it fed is a nightmare!

                    Morning! Current state of affairs

                    1455780245897-385861406.jpg
I got the guttering "up" about November time, noticed a massive improvement in the condensation and damp in the garage, so I extended it to the door to drain away freely
                    14557802654621490130473.jpg
                    1455780292216-1620868970.jpg
Also added louvres to the door, now the garage is pretty much damp and condensation free. I did add a louvred window too but I'm only allowed to upload 12 images at once :)

                    1455780307647-670337065.jpg

                    The massacre has happened again!
                    1455780362918-380520259.jpg
Although these little bulbs are making sure they come up nice and early!
                    1455780449542-1676677617.jpg
The massacre! No more hedge! This was always the plan. Because we are about 6-12 feet above our neighbors on the party wall, I could never retrieve hedge cuttings that escape into their garden... also I have bought myself a new greenhouse to fill the gap!
                    1455780518518-1880640036.jpg
The tree is no more! :( I now have a big planting space. Still need to grind the stump down, but progress is progress, it was never going to be a nice healthy tree anyway.

                    1455780543637-850081535.jpg
I dug all my strawberries up to dig the soil over to replant, ran out of time, so they are sitting in the planter while the weedkiller dissipates from the soil... ahem clay I turned
                    1455780557462-353138883.jpg
Nice planting area. I ran out of weather window or I'd have dug out the Entire top... I'm going to have a potato field up here. To eat, and to try improve the soil.
                    1455780583327-163544462.jpg
The roses are looking glum I really should pull the middle one out and relocate it... maybe later!
More updates tomorrow! :) now's time to get to work

With the hedge gone Neil, what are you planning to replace it with as there's a bit of a safety issue there now?
