Half barrels is fine. I'll be ruining a planter along the entire length of the wall, about 30cm wide by 50cm high.
I've got plenty of soil and drainage material. Woodwork is no problem for me :)
I got a fair chunk of the wall done yesterday. It may be *almost* finished tonight! Then levelling everything out and uprooting about 10hedge stumps. Which won't be enjoyable at all! The roots are the diameter of my arm in places!

Not only soil but make sure there's something in there to keep the plants fed. Have you thought about getting water up there to them as well?

I don't envy you with the hedge stumps, if they're privet it's going to be tough work!

This is the daunting stairway to muddy heaven/hell depending on your mood!
These stairs are not nice when trying to carry blocks up!
        IMAG0216.jpg

The hedges... yes, their stumps weigh a good 50kg, i've been struggling to lift them, easier to roll them! 6 to go!

        IMAG0217.jpg

The exciting bit though is, i found the previously buried wall! it's not pretty! :(

        IMAG0218.jpg

Thats such a shame, although a slight change of plans means it's easily solved without having to buy lots of stone!

I tried fitting the entire area in one picture from the top level, but i couldn't, it's getting closer now!
        IMAG0219.jpg

The wall is to its full length, we just ran out of mortar, the change of plans means this wall is now going to run parallel with the "ugly" wall so we have three "nice" smooth walls to mount my benches to, which we are going to paint a natural colour to blend in.

        IMAG0215.jpg

The gravel pile is for the drainage behind.

A familiar viewpoint! two more layers of stacked stone on top of the wall to the foreground of the picture. they will be mortared in eventually.

        IMAG0213.jpg

        Coming to shape now!

Now the view, not sure if i've posted this up yet, but we do get quite a nice view from up there!

        IMAG0220.jpg

        And for a final one!
        What is this plant?

On another quick note, while i remember.
Another couple of projects which have been completed since i last updated...
I re-made our folding fence/gate between our house and the garage.
Free Pallet wood to the rescue!

          IMAG0062.jpg

          And a lick of paint!

          IMAG0097.jpg

          Magic!

          IMAG0100.jpg

This gate folds in the middle (away) from the photo, so we can use the left hand side to walk in and out of, general use, then it also hinges on the garage wall, which means we can fold the gate fully out of the way. But to do this in one would be impossible due to the back door step, i.e. the fence would stop on it as it doesn't clear it. easy enough, double fold out of the way!
          IMAG0101.jpg
          IMAG0102.jpg

Now look in the background, next doors "dump" behind their garage-urgh! Complete with a pet cemetery and wooden headstones- creepy!

So i put a couple of fence panels up... Much Much nicer!

          IMAG0123.jpg
          IMAG0124_1.jpg
          IMAG0125.jpg

And of course, our little tulip border.

          IMAG0105.jpg

I think i'm up to date now!

I'm enjoying following your thread VC. :dbgrtmb: You've certainly made progress and I'm glad that it's not me doing all the hard graft! :)

Could you not rig up some sort of pulley system top and bottom of the steps for moving blocks. A cable car would be even better.

We need a close up of the foliage on the red leaved plant please. It also looks like you've got a Sambucus loitering there too. :)

Yes, it's a member of the Elderberry family. :)

I'll finally be able to get back into the garden tonight! Yay. Since the last update.... I put some stakes in the ground to work out how far off level I was... Not bad if I do say so myself. And laid the landscaping fabric behind the wall and added the first few shovels of gravel back there.
next update should* be a nice flat fully dug out area! Unless we get distracted and rip out the tree!

I'm planning on getting a final grade to the ground and finishing the digging so we can see what we have... A bit of motivation. And the best ( thin and non clumpy) soil is piled up ready to get a nice level to work from.
then the tree. my other half wants to replace it with a cherry tree. She wants pink blossom I want tasty fruit. We can't decide where we want it either... I'll post pics up when I get to that point, I'm thinking 10years time with no trimming space. She's Thinking pretty now and 5years time it reaches the boundaries then needs trimming... Guess who will be trimming!

Regarding the tree I'm thinking pretty - and messy when it sheds it's flowers, so I'd put it in a place where it's least likely to be an issue. :heehee:

It sounds like a Morello cherry is on the cards then, apparently there's a dwarf version too. :)

I do have progress! Lots of it. Also plans, precise ones.... Dragging a spade in the dirt plans! Also have a 90%level area! Oh and a tree plan and privacy plan. Ahh exiting! And everything is growing well! I thought this soil would be spent but it's certainly producing!
although there's a distinct lack of motivation going around! I think most of this week will be taken by procrastinating and little tidying jobs.

It doesn't hurt to take a break, stand back and see how it's all coming together. It also gives you thinking time for the next step, which by the sound of it is already buzzing around in your head. With any project one idea leads to another and it all starts to fall into place. :)
