A catalogue of engraved plates of precious and ornamental stones, including poetry, by Jacques de Gheyn dated 1601. Published by the author? King James of England.

    Brilliant. [IMG] [IMG]
Blackthorn got in first. Lady of Leisure came in with more details so i think I'll call it a tie.
Well done both [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Abraham Gorlaeus wrote and published the book in 1601.
He was noted collector of precious stones (engraved ones for use as seals).
The engraving for the plates may have been done by Jacques de Gheyn who also did the portrait .
The verse under the poem is by Hugo Grotius.
The connection with a king is with King James as the heirs of Gorlaeus sold his collection to Prince Henry, James' son.
If you found the answers by Googling you did well as there isn't a lot out there and most of what there is isn't in english

    Wish it was!
It's one of a pile belonging to Mrs W's mum that I'm sorting out in order to send for auction. This one should raise enough to allow her to put in an en-suite bathroom.
