Is the ball, a handle, ornamental, or fits into a mechanical socket?

    Weather vane?
Whilst everyone is pondering over Pal's iron
thingy [ do your skills extend to blacksmithery as well?], I have a dragon that we found in the loft of an old stables amongst horse brasses and bits of leather [I don't know if this is relevant]. It looks to be Victorian or Edwardian from the other things, and seems to be of some low grade silver or tin, heavy but not heavy enough for lead. Does anyone think it had a use? The piece of walnut was put on it for display.
Hope the pictures don't make anyone dizzy!

The base has no fixing and is fully moulded, not flattened. It's about 9cms tall and 2 wide

Oh, the above was for Pal's thingy but yours could fit the bill also, Liz! [IMG]

Liz, could yours be a do-dah decoration for on top of a horses head for special fetes, occasions, etc? Does anything move on it, ie, a door knocker?

No, LOL it has no moving parts, and no fixings or signs of wear. Did think of door knocker but can't think how it might have been pivoted.
