Paladin my friend....Richardson did go on to make metal windows and this is the mechanism that opened and closed them...primative you might say but good enough for the the large hot-houses at the Cambridge Botanicle gardens.

I did in fact take the picture with you in mind..

I have seen such windows and supporting frames in situ but not the open/close gear before..It was always a mystery to me how they were operated!

Metal yes.
Found in a croft not too far from John O'Groats! Though once upon a time we had one too, but it was never used by us.

(Had a super time on the north coast L O'L thanks)

 

Oh (off thread but..) while much of the UK was drowning at the end of last week we were enjoying this on the far nothern tip of the UK.

 

I was going to say something about lathe and plaster ... but metal doesn't come into that ... hmmm ...
